Can Rolly Romero bounce back, or is he just not cut out for top-tier boxing?

It is back to the drawing board for Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero. The recent spate of defeats has knocked him down the pecking order. The Las Vegas native has suffered two defeats in his last three fights. His most recent loss came against Isaac Cruz in March this month in a devastating fashion, as the former WBA champion had no reply to getting hit repeatedly by the barrage of punches from ‘Pitbull’ in the eighth round, forcing the referee to stop the fight. Some would argue Rolly Romero isn’t the same fighter he was since his defeat to Gervonta Davis in 2022. Doubts have been raised about his boxing prowess and weak chin, as his two defeats in his professional career have been technical knockouts.

With thirteen knockouts in seventeen fights, Rolly Romero’s devastating punching power has never been in doubt. But, an exposed chin, due to lack of defensive prowess, leaves him open for his opponents to catch him repeatedly. Romero’s lackluster display against Cruz forced his contemporary Ryan Garcia to comment, “He’s inexperienced and now his chin is toast and his body can’t take a shot. Those weren’t even hard punches.” Now, a similar sentiment is being shared by boxing fans as Rolly Romero shared a video of him working on a heavy bag ahead of his matchup against Manuel Jaimes on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga on September 14.

Back to work on basics!

It will be an uphill task for Rolly Romero as he looks to make his way back to the top of the super-lightweight division. Another loss would set back the 29-year-old fighter’s chances of bagging financially lucrative fights in the future. Romero’s latest Instagram post shows him testing out his power punches on the heavy bag.

It is back to the basics for the 29-year-old fighter, as he was seen working on his jabs. Then, he followed it up with a simple combination— two jabs, then a jab and a right hook. Rolly Romero showcased the devastating power he had in his right, by repeating the same combination multiple times on the punching bag. You can hear the pop as he throws his right at a high speed. He aptly captioned the video, “punches with pop”.

Cruz’s next challenge will be the ultimate litmus test of his standing amongst his peers in the super-lightweight division like Devin Haney, and Ryan Garcia. His last fight proved to be a fall from grace as he lost his WBA junior welterweight title. What’s more, life played a cruel joke on Rolando Romero, as he finessed himself out of a big-money fight against Garcia, only to lose the title to Cruz, and settle for a lesser payday. Meanwhile, fans were not impressed as they shared their opinion on Romero’s latest training footage.
