Canelo Alvarez, the face of modern boxing, recently signed a four-fight deal with His Excellency, Turki Alalshikh. This lucrative contract will see the Mexican champion take on some of the sport’s biggest names. On May 3rd, he will face off against undefeated IBF super middleweight champion, William Scull. Both fighters are putting their belts on the line. As Canelo continues to dominate the super middleweight division, he is also set for another massive fight in the year—the one that everyone has been waiting for—a potential clash with Terence Crawford. Scheduled for September, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the fight is expected to be the biggest fight in modern boxing.

However, once this fight ends, a tantalizing question arises: what’s next for Canelo Alvarez? Could a fight with David Benavidez finally happen, or will Canelo choose retirement after facing Crawford? To shed some light on this possibility, rising lightweight star Keyshawn Davis shared his thoughts on what could unfold in Canelo’s future.

Is it really the ‘David vs. Goliath’ story for Terence Crawford?

Recently, the atsboxing shared a post on Instagram. The caption read, “@keyshawndavis is picking Bud to beat Canelo and shock the world 😲🌎”. In a video shared by the platform, Keyshawn was asked about the potential fight between Canelo Alvarez and Crawford. In the video, Keyshawn Davis explained his thoughts on what would happen after the unified Super Middleweight champion faces Terence Crawford in September.

Davis suggested that after Canelo Alvarez fights Terence Crawford, there won’t be much left for him to prove. “It’s like nothing else that we can really ask for him to do,” the Businessman said. He acknowledged that a fight with David Benavidez is an option. However, he also believed it wouldn’t generate as much money as a Canelo vs. Crawford fight. “I don’t think lucratively that’s gonna make more money than him and Terence.” He implied that after the Crawford fight, “It’s like Canelo You keep doing what you’ve been doing or you can retire.”

When pressed by the reporter if Davis favors Bud Crawford over Canelo Alvarez, Davis confidently said, “Of course.” The reporter followed up by asking whether weight would play a factor in the fight. “Weight matters,” Davis admitted. However, the Businessman explained, “I think he (Terence) chose to fight cuz he knows he can handle that weight. He emphasized that he has personally watched Terence Crawford train and knows him very well. He praised Crawford’s mentality, calling it “crazy.

The 12-0 boxer further compared the potential fight to the biblical story of David vs. Goliath, where the smaller underdog (David) defeats the giant (Goliath). He believes Terence Crawford (the smaller man) will defeat the bigger and stronger Canelo just like in the story. “I believe David’s gonna beat Goliath in this fight,” the Norfolk native stated boldly. But that wasn’t all Keyshawn Davis had to say.

The Canelo Alvarez vs. David Benavidez debate

Keyshawn Davis, who is fighting for his first world title against Denys Berinchyk on Valentine’s night, was asked about the possibility of Canelo Alvarez ever facing David Benavidez. While Davis holds the Mexican champion in high regard, he also believes Benavidez has the edge in a potential showdown.

While talking to Si.com, the 25-year-old explained that Canelo Alvarez might be reluctant to fight Benavidez. The reason? “It’s the age, it’s the size and it’s Benavidez’s attitude,” Davis contended. He moreover added that the undefeated WBC Interim Light Heavyweight champion would present a serious challenge for Canelo Alvarez. “He’s not losing type of attitude… He’s not scared of nobody.”

Despite Davis’ belief that the 30-0 boxer has the advantage, he also made it clear that a loss for the Guadalajara native wouldn’t tarnish his legacy. “Canelo is the face of boxing,” Davis stated, emphasizing that even if Canelo were to lose to Benavidez, it wouldn’t take away from his status as one of the greatest boxers of all time. “A loss to David Benavidez, it’s gonna be like, okay, he’s still the GOAT. Canelo is always gonna be Canelo Alvarez.”

While Canelo will face William Scull for a chance to become undisputed once again, Benavidez is eyeing the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol for the light heavyweight undisputed title. With that said, the bigger questions loom: Will he retire after his four-fight deal ends, or will a long-awaited bout against David Benavidez come to fruition?
