The Boulevard Hall of Riyadh saw something unravel over the weekend that the boxing realm hardly expected. In a fight of its kind, WBC Heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury registered a split decision victory over former UFC fighter, Francis Ngannou. While the victory was in favor of Tyson, he did not reap the title of a victor.

After having glided through multiple victories against some of the best fighters in the realm, the Heavyweight giant fell short of dominating the ring against someone who has never boxed before. The premise of such results has ushered some serious doubts about Fury’s caliber in the sport. The fight leaves a scathe not just on his career but also on his face which will be a constant reminder of what went down against Ngannou.

‘Gyspy King’ Fury entered the ring on the 28th of October with all the might he had accumulated since his last fight in December of 2022. However, the powerful jabs that he channeled toward his opponent failed to leave an imprint on fight night. With each offense he sent Ngannou’s way, there came a response that was far more damaging. So much so that ‘The Predator’ even managed to throw him to the ground in the third round through a left hook.

That round defined the core of what the fight meant to both the fighters. As the ten rounds elapsed, public sentiments uproared putting Ngannou as the favorite, a stellar change from early predictions. The night saw both fighters battle it out with everything they’ve got. Remanence of it however was visible on Fury’s face as he came out of the ring with a bruise on his left eye. A reminder that pushed fans into a lively discourse.

Fans emerge in favor of Francis Ngannou

Fight night was distinct in how it ended for both fighters. Fury lost a major chunk of the reverence he had earned through his 34-unbeaten record. Ngannou on the other hand, won the realm in his maiden fight. The scars on Fury’s record and his face will be a striking reminder of this fight that seemed to have altered the perception he held in combat.

A still from the fight, wherein Ngannou was seen reaping the glories of having knocked down Fury emerged. It mirrored what Ngannou had managed to pull off in his first boxing match: push a giant to his back. A fan echoed the moment.

Despite having regretted a victory against Ngannou, Fury excused himself from the ring faster than the Cameroonian fighter. A fan pondered that his leaving the ring was a result of a revelation that had struck Fury: he had marginally won the fight.

At the end of fight night, one thing was certain. Francis Ngannou had it in him to show a world champion the face of defeat. His power exemplified the assumption.

Fury’s performance against Ngannou has raised questions about his scheduled fight for December 23rd, against Oleksandr Usyk. However, promoter Frank Warren has clarified that the fighters need a breather after the intense fight that happened over the weekend, meaning, the Usyk fight could be pushed to as early as March of 24.

A fan however saw what the fight had done to Fury. A fighter who rose to fame for the prowess he encompassed registered a victory that hardly smelt of greatness. The fan hoped for him to return in all his glory.
