In boxing, the reverberations of a great fight echo across the spectrum. Even random social dos aren’t spared. David Benavidez shared a pic of him having lunch with former world champion and now leading promoter Oscar De La Hoya. Their respective partners, Karina Silva, and Holly Sonders joined the duo. But the seemingly unpretentious get-together led to scrutiny by fans.
While David Benavidez knocked a big victory over Caleb Plant this March, Oscar De La Hoya suffered a recent shock. One of the biggest draws of present-day boxing, Ryan Garcia, whom De La Hoya has been promoting since 2016, suffered his first professional loss at the hands of the mighty Gervonta Davis.
Through his Instagram handle, @benavidez300 shared the pic and messaged, “It was an [a] honor to have lunch over the weekend with the legend himself @oscardelahoya and @holly.sonders. Thank you for all the advice I [really] appreciate you taking the time out to hang out with us 💪💪💪.”

The post has so far received over 21k likes and started receiving a multitude of comments. Let’s look at a few interesting ones.
Fans’ cautionary advice to David Benavidez
A user named Orlando Hernandez seemed pretty apprehensive and warned Benavidez not to put his faith in De La Hoya. Hernandez believes that Oscar would leave him in the lurch as he allegedly did in Garcia’s case. He stated, “Don’t trust him, bro. He will leave you hanging [as] like he did Ryan.“
Another user named Ramirez Santi also told Benavidez not to sign any deal with De La Hoya. “Don’t sign with [the] golden boy,” Santi said. A user named Komander cautioned the Arizonian along similar lines, “Please don’t sign with golden boy promotions.“
A bit terser than others, one user seemed curious and would like to see if De La Hoya would be so friendly and gracious once David Morell thrashes Benavidez during their clash. They said, “Let’s see if he shakes your hand like this when @davidmorrelljr_oficial beats you.“
User Ukeme Idiong seemed to be going against the grain and wondered why so many dislike Oscar De La Hoya and his girlfriend, Holly Sonders. “Damn people, [do] not stop hating on Oscar and his girl @holly.sonders. [But], they are happy, and that’s what is important. I am glad you guys are living your best life, and y’all [are] a beautiful couple. I pray the best for your guys’ future together.” Idiong said.

Finally, Juan Lopez posited that De la Hoya wasn’t comfortable with the Garcia-Davis confrontation. He had made Garcia rich and famous before taking on ‘Tank’ Davis. There was no need for the Californian to clash heads-on with the Baltimorean. Ryan Garcia was just hell-bent on ruining his record. Lopez stated, “Hold up……. Oscar was against this fight with Ryan and Tank. honestly speaking…. Oscar made Ryan famous and Rich without [the] tank fight .. Ryan ask[s] to ruin his unblemished record. Oscar tried to prevent Ryan from getting punished and quitting.“
As far as the professional front is concerned, Benavidez’s namesake, David Morell, fresh after a quick knockout victory over Yamaguchi Falcao, remains hopeful that the two would meet sometime later this year. However, there’s no official confirmation. Whether ‘The Mexican Monster’ would accept Morell’s challenge or pursue a big fight against the undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez, remains to be seen.
