After a long period of silence, the squared circle might have two heavyweight boxers clashing inside the ring. The weight class is picking up some pace after what seemed like a prolonged moment of radio silence. As other weight classes like welterweight, and lightweight gave us one of the most iconic clashes of the year, the heavyweight division failed to give the fans the fight they wanted. However, British promoter, Eddie Hearn has come bearing some good news for the weight class.

For a while now, the world awaited the confirmation of the unification bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk. But as their negotiations reached a deadlock, much hope for the weight class fell through. Such has been the reality of the division. Crucial fights fail to materialize at the negotiation table. But as we enter the latter half of the year, it seems as though the weight class might give us some exciting matchups.

Earlier this year, Tyson Fury made claims that his team had sent over a contract to Anthony Joshua, outlining a September clash. But the latter’s promoter Eddie Hearn denied the claims. He further suggested that they have received a fight proposal but not a contract. The  heavyweight Titans have been trying to get their hands on each other for a long time now. It dates back to the time when Anthony Joshua was still a unified heavyweight champion.

However, Hearn confirmed that they’re not doing away with the idea of an AJ-Fury clash. He said, “We’re not closing the door on a Tyson Fury fight. We’ve just to make sure Anthony Joshua’s career goes to plan and smoothly and not messed around by other people.”

The first attempt at this fight was made early in 2021 when a Saudi Arabia bout was outlined for April of that year. However, a US court intervened to give Deontay Wilder his trilogy fight against AJ. Now, Eddie Hearn has brought in some exciting news on this front. He said, “Look, don’t be completely shocked to see AJ-Fury early next year.”

AJ vs. Deontay Wilder Negotiations in its final leg

Promoter Eddie Hearn also spoke about how close they are to finalizing the impending fight between AJ and Deontay Wilder. When the Whyte fight fell through it was important for Hearn to pick a new opponent for AJ to ensure that the main event was not a flop. The new fighter needed to be top tier but at the same time not risk a major fight between Joshua and Deontay Wilder that hinged upon the British boxer’s victory at the O2 Arena on August 12.

Now that AJ’s crusade against Helenius was a success, his fight against Wilder is also set to see the light of day. This fight gets added to the talks happening between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s team for their fights too. If these two fights get finalized, it will be a stellar season for the heavyweight division.

Speaking about such developments, Hearn said, “There are definite conversations about Fury-Usyk. You know the conversations about AJ-Wilder, but anything’s possible at this stage. So, you’re talking about tens of millions of dollars. These things do take time. I said yesterday it’s slow, it is slow. But it’s slow for a reason. But we do need to speed up. Our Moneys agreed. So is Wilder. We gotta paper it, we gotta get it done. And we’ll see if we do.”
