Keshawn Davis’ early life and background

Keyshawn Davis was born on February 27, 1999, in Norfolk, Virginia. His mother, Wanda Davis, who is originally from Long Island, New York, pushed him and his brothers, Kelvin and Keon Davis, into a nearby boxing gym, at a very early age. She thought of sports as a haven that would keep her children out of trouble. Well, that move proved to be the right choice as it laid the foundation for Davis and his brother’s boxing career. With each extra day in the gym, the brothers’ love for the sport grew and the boxing world today knows the trio as DB3. The 12-0 boxer is also an elder brother to two sisters, Shante Davis and Shanice Davis.

It was a tough childhood as the family was struck by poverty. Yet Wanda never let her son miss anything and did everyone she could. Davis had to separate from his mother when he moved to Alexandria to train under famed boxing coach Kay Koroma. The anxiety of being separated from his family turned into anger that used to come out whenever he entered the squared circle. For him, the bell meant he could release all his pressure.

Things got so bad that the school even hospitalized him in a facility. However, that also became a wake-up call for him as he started to trust his new reality. After spending a week in the facility in Alexandria, Keyshawn Davis came out a new man. He enrolled himself into therapy and hurled himself into boxing.

The trio’s amateur boxing career took flight when all three of them competed on the same card in Norfolk, 12 years ago. Norfolk’s own legendary boxer and 1984 Olympic gold medalist Pernell Whitaker personally blessed the event. The whole crowd looked at nothing but Whitaker while the legend’s eyes remained fixed on Keyshawn Davis, who was 13 years old at the time. The star boxer of the Davis family impressed the legend so much that he took him under his wing three years later. The pair started training in a makeshift garage gym of Whitaker’s friend. However, the partnership lasted only three weeks as Norfolk’s rising star was called up to USA Boxing’s training center in Colorado Springs to work alongside Shakur Stevenson.

His training spell with the WBC lightweight champion was fruitful, and he learned a lot of things. Davis finally earned his spot on the USA Olympic team four years later in 2020, after much hard work.
