With another fight, and another regular day at the office, Canelo Alvarez is cruising towards cementing his legacy. His fight with Edgar Berlanga proved to be an exciting affair, and with another win in his bag, he is already looking to lay the claim on the greatest of all time to enter the squared circle. But there is a minor hiccup or a check that he needs to pass. What is that?
Despite the Mexican champion’s exploits and record, he has two losses in his record column. The first of these came against Floyd Mayweather, when he was still a young boxer, trying to solidify his position in the sport. The loss against ‘Pretty Boy’ allowed him to grow exponentially, and after Floyd’s retirement from the sport, Canelo became the face of boxing and the fighter the fans know him as. But the 34-year-old boxer’s second loss came against Dmitry Bivol, a fight many believed he was the favorite to win.
While Mayweather, at 50-0, leads the race to go down in history as the greatest fighter of the current generation, Alvarez, at 62-2-2, falls marginally behind him. So, what does he need to do? According to Bivol’s manager, Vadim Kornilov, Alvarez needs to exact revenge. But as ‘Money’ has already hung up the gloves, the name that remains is Bivol.

Kornilov turned to his X handle and wrote, “@Canelo has to avenge his losses to @bivol_d and @FloydMayweather (if he wasn’t retired) before he or they say that he is the greatest again.”

These comments come at a critical juncture, as Alvarez had recently specified his intent to fight Bivol for a rematch. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger admitted recently, “When I spoke to Canelo yesterday, he said he wants to meet Bivol next.” However, it hinges on one condition: Bivol defeats Artur Beterbiev on October 12.

Eddie Hearn, who promotes Bivol, shed light on the possibility of a rematch with Alvarez. The British promoter was upbeat about the chances, whether Bivol secures the win and clinches the undisputed crown at 175 or not. He told Chris Mannix, “If Bivol wins or loses, that’s an option. If Bivol were to lose [to Beterbiev], Bivol would come down to 168 to rematch him [Canelo]. If Bivol were to win, you have the undisputed fight at 175. That’s a big fight.”

It remains to be seen who will emerge victorious in the clash for all the marbles at 175. But David Benavidez‘s position as the WBC mandatory complicates the situation. While Benavidez hasn’t looked comfortable at 175 in his only fight, he might take some time and fight a couple of bouts before finding his footing and that’s when a rematch between Alvarez and Bivol can be squeezed in.
