If he was really serious about avenging his loss to Dmitry Bivol, Canelo Alvarez should have fought the Russian while he still had the chance. After defending his WBA Light-Heavyweight title against Alvarez in 2022, Bivol was open to rematching the Mexican boxer at Super-Middleweight for Canelo’s titles. However, Canelo remained adamant about facing Bivol at 175 lbs, which eventually led to nothing. And now Dmitry Bivol doesn’t want to bother about Canelo Alvarez either.
Last year, Canelo Alvarez accused Dmitry Bivol of making things hard while contending that he tried his best to get the rematch. But, why would Bivol want to rematch Alvarez at 175 lbs when he desired to become an undisputed champion in the sport? For the same reason, the Russian boxer decided to move on and focus on Artur Beterbiev, the IBF, WBC, and WBO Light-Heavyweight champion.
Bivol and Beterbiev were supposed to lock horns this June. However, a ruptured meniscus led Beterbiev to withdraw from the fight and the event was postponed to October 12. With Beterbiev gone, Bivol entered the ring against Malik Zinad against whom he secured a sixth-round TKO win. And now Bivol must resume his preparation for Beterbiev. So, does that leave him any room for Canelo Alvarez? “I don’t have him in my schedule and my mind,” began Bivol.

“It’s somewhere else now. I have another way. Maybe in the future, we could see each other again. But, not in the soon future. I can’t see it,” he added. In this connection, Bivol was asked if he could make 168 lbs which is Canelo’s weight at super middleweight. While he could make the weight, Bivol declared, “I have another plan for my career. I have a contract with the Saudi, with Matchroom. I have my way.”

In other words, Bivol does not want to think of anyone other than Artur Beterbiev. In that case, who should Canelo Alvarez fight next?

Had Canelo Alvarez agreed to face Dmitry Bivol at 168 lbs with his undisputed title on the line, Bivol would have rematched the former. Thinking of the situation back then, Bivol mourned, “I could choose different ways. Go with him 168 [or] I could still be here – I could go anywhere. And now I can’t. We had this chance. But we didn’t use it.” Meanwhile, after Alvarez defeated Jaime Munguia, the IBF assigned the Mexican boxer William Scull.
Scull is currently undefeated at 168 lbs with twenty-two wins with nine of his victories coming by the way of a knockout. The two boxers have been ordered to begin negotiation. However, as of now, the purse bid has yet to take place. Based on Scull’s popularity or lack thereof, there is a very slim chance that Canelo will agree to the fight just to keep his undisputed status intact.
