Immediately after the loss to Dmitry Bivol on May 7th, 2022, the outclassed Canelo Alvarez demanded a rematch with the Russian. As a result, Bivol even asked Canelo to put his belts on the line for the second fight. But soon the talks died down due to various reasons, and the two boxers gradually moved on.
While Canelo went to fight the likes of Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder, the Russian boxer defended his WBA title against Gilberto Ramirez. At this, before Bivol became a unified champion last December, Alvarez informed the media that Bivol avoided the rematch while the Mexican tried his best. However, in a recent interview, Bivol debunked Canelo’s claims on why the rematch did not take place.

Although Dmitry Bivol wanted to rematch Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs since the Russian wanted to be Undisputed, the Mexican boxer insisted the rematch take place at 175 lbs where he lost. But, ahead of the Jermell Charlo fight, Alvarez told Brian Custer that Bivol made the negotiations for the rematch “hard” by trying to impose his decisions on everything. However, after the win against Lyndon Arthur, Bivol has now told BoxingScene that the two boxers never discussed the negotiations for a second fight.
“How can I make [negotiations] difficult? We didn’t even discuss it, to be honest. Nothing,” said Bivol. “He had his dates already and then I saw in the news that the problem was me. It was funny. I beat him once. I’m good,” the Unified Light-Heavyweight champion added. In addition, Bivol reiterated his hunger to become undisputed in the sport. Likewise, he implied that, for the time being, he was only focused on Artur Beterbiev, the IBF, WBO, and WBC Light-Heavyweight champion.
“I am focused on being the undisputed champion in the light heavyweight division. The subject with Canelo is now closed,” Bivol added. In another interview with Matchroom Boxing, Bivol placed Beterbiev above Canelo.
Bivol brands Artur Beterbiev a stronger and harder opponent than Canelo
On being asked if Beterbiev would be the hardest test in his career, Dmitry Bivol answered in the affirmative. In his opinion, Beterbiev’s physical strength and solid technique make the Canadian boxer a commendable fighter in the ring. “To be honest, I believe this is the hardest test. Why? Because he’s physically stronger than Canelo,” said Bivol in an exclusive with Matchroom Boxing. Then he lauded Artur’s technique.
