Canelo Alvarez is now eyeing a September 16 rematch with Dmitry Bivol at 175 lbs. Ahead of his bout with John Ryder, the Mexican boxer declared he wants “the same terms, the same everything as the last fight“. However, Bivol is lacking “motivation” to fight Alvarez at a weight class where he has already beaten the latter last year in the ring. While Canelo Alvarez wants the bout at 175, Dmitry Bivol, searching for challenges, is willing to fight the former at 168 lbs.

In Bivol’s manager’s view, if Bivol beat Alvarez at 168 lbs, the Mexican fighter will be out of excuses. Likewise, in a straightforward statement, Vadim Kornilov said their main goal was to “go for undisputed“. In order to make that dream come true, the Russian boxer wants to either fight Artur Beterbiev at 175 lbs or Canelo Alvarez at 168 lbs. Thus, Bivol enquired about the motivation he would need to fight Alvarez at 175 lbs once again.

Dmitry Bivol is adamant that he would not fight Alvarez at 175 lbs. While Canelo argued he dominated Bivol for five or six rounds in their fight, Bivol believes he proved a point by defeating Alvarez in May last year. Hence, in a recent interview with ESPN, Bivol said, “Why should I even do the rematch at 175? What is the challenge or what is the motivation for me if I’ve already beaten him at that weight class?”

And I don’t think we should worry about who thinks what. It’s really about what we want, what each of us wants,” Bivol added. According to the Russian fighter, if Canelo actually wants to win then he might have a better chance at 168lbs. “And for me, there should be some motivation and some challenge,” emphasized Bivol.
