As much as boxing is the sport of skill and talent, it also thrives on trash talk. However, there are some lines that even the biggest loudmouths dare not cross—the family. Gervonta Davis doesn’t seem to have received that memo. Last month, the Baltimore native attacked the family of Terence Crawford on social media. And now, Davis’ former promoter, Floyd Mayweather, has shared his thoughts on it.
You see, last month, the Baltimore native was excluded from the list of guests at the Ring Magazine Awards gala. It’s worth noting that Saudi Boxing figurehead Turki Alalshikh had bought the boxing news publication, and ‘Tank’ Davis doesn’t exactly share a cordial relationship with His Excellency. Nevertheless, Davis felt insulted by the gesture as he saw numerous boxing personalities attend the event and bask in the limelight.
This prompted the undefeated knockout artist to take his frustration to social media, as he started throwing daggers at the people who decided to attend the event. Former undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford, however, wasn’t one to sit quietly. He quickly fired a tweet of his own, which seems to have sent Davis over the edge.

“I see somebody mad they wasn’t invited to the Ring Magazine gala,” Crawford wrote on X. Almost immediately, the pair started going back and forth on X, with both sides claiming they had more money than the other. However, Tank decided to take it to uncharted territories by roping in Terence Crawford’s family into the mix. In a crass post, he commented on Crawford’s wife and family, for which Gervonta Davis received insurmountable rebuke on social media from many boxing entities at the time. So what’s new?
Very low by Tank Davis @Gervontaa, bringing Terence Crawford’s @terencecrawford family into it, you never ever bring family into it. EVER!!! Classless move. #Boxing pic.twitter.com/znDKyiiFUr

Well, while appearing in an interview with Brian Mazique recently, Floyd Mayweather was pressed about the former Mayweather Promotions star Gervonta Davis and his coarse comment on Crawford’s wife. “I think Terence Crawford right now is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the sport of boxing,” Floyd Mayweather began. “It’s good to see him in this position that he’s in.”
“I think he has a beautiful family. I think he has a beautiful wife, a beautiful queen, a black queen. And there’s nothing better than a black woman in this world, that’s just my opinion. We are all entitled to our opinion. I think we need to start sticking together and pushing each other to be great instead of arguing on social media. And push each other in a positive way,” the 50-0 boxer added.
While money has motivated both boxers, Terence Crawford claims he has grown as a boxer.

Terence Crawford on a new path
Even though both fighters faced similar challenges growing up, Crawford seems to have developed a different outlook on life. Following his exchange with Davis, he took to X to share a tweet reflecting on his journey to the top of the sport while taking a sneaky shot at Davis. “I’m glad I’m not the man I once used to be. Growth is a blessing because some people don’t change when better days is right in front of them,” he stated.

Crawford grew up in Omaha, Nebraska—a city often marked by poverty, crime, and limited opportunities—making it difficult to escape the cycle of violence and adversity. Gang activity, drug-related crimes, and a lack of resources were prevalent in his surroundings. It would have been easy for Crawford to fall into the same struggles, but he had a different vision for his future. Thankfully, he is in a better place today, both physically and mentally—a part of the credit surely goes to his loving family.
That said, there’s no denying that Gervonta Davis crossed a line with his comments about Terence Crawford’s wife. Even Floyd Mayweather backed Crawford, although he didn’t publicly shame Davis for his actions. What did you think about the entire fiasco?
