It is Keyshawn Davis’ time and in a few hours, he will be entering the biggest fight of his life against Denys Berinchyk in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York for the WBO lightweight title. Both fighters have had their separate path to the top and have had some impressive performances inside the ring. Undoubtedly, the two undefeated fighters are going to put on a stellar show and no one has any doubt regarding that.

However, despite it being a confirmed blockbuster affair, somehow it is not the talk of the town. The constant incidents of racism that the Norfolk native has alleged have hijacked the narrative of the event. During the official press conference ahead of the Valentine Day’s bout, The Businessman revealed how he received a package delivered to his hotel room—a package which he labeled “racist”. Considering the contents of the package, the assumption is not too far off. While Davis does not know where the package came from or who sent it, somehow Teofimo Lopez has become the main suspect. How? Let’s find out why.

Did Teofimo Lopez send the “racist” package?

When he received the package, the Olympic silver medalist initially assumed that the package was planted by someone from Denys Berinchyk’s team or the Ukranian himself. As a result, during the press conference, Keyshawn Davis even declared, “This guy came to America to give me bananas and a watermelon with a note on it.” He kept the content of the note under wraps. However, he made sure to tell everyone, “It’s unprofessional, and I feel like it’s racist, and you just made this fight a little more personal.”

However, Teofimo Lopez quickly inserted himself into the conversation by posting a video of himself eating a banana while watching Keyshawn Davis’ interview on his phone. The Takeover was laughing hysterically, making people assume that the video was a sort of confession by him. However, he never admitted anything explicitly. His caption too made him sound very suspect: “MAKE BOXING GREAT AGAIN.”

The video was enough for the Norfolk native to assume that it was not Berinchyk who sent the package, but rather Teofimo Lopez himself. The Businessman issued an apology to the Ukrainian camp and ripped apart the WBO super lightweight champion. In a video posted by FightHype on their YouTube channel, the 25-year-old went on a rant against the Brooklyn native.

He exclaimed, “I heard Teo did it.” The Norfolk native believes that Lopez is trying to stay relevant because even after winning the WBO championship, he is not getting the fights he desires. “Teo, you’re trying to do everything to make yourself relevant,” declared Davis.

Did Teofimo Lopez cross the line, or is Keyshawn Davis overreacting to the package incident?

He feels that Lopez needs a big match as soon as possible because “It’s the taxes that are killing him. So, he’s trying to cash out,” stated Davis. However, despite it being an immense opportunity even for the Olympic silver medalist, he dismissed the idea of engaging in a fight with the WBO super lightweight champion anytime in the future.

Another setback for Teofimo Lopez

Keyshawn Davis thinks that a fight against him would get Teofimo Lopez out of the financial turmoil he is supposedly in. “I ain’t fighting you. I’m not helping you out,” declared Davis. He refused to make him “a millionaire” by offering him a fight after what he allegedly did. It is definitely a huge setback for the Brooklyn native who is desperately looking for a fight.

His last bout came in June last year against Steve Claggett in a successful defense. For the past few months, he has been looking for a title unification bout against IBF super lightweight champion Richardson Hitchins. However, Keyshawn Davis believes that the WBO lightweight champion sees him as a more profitable option. “He was trying to fight the IBF world champ… then he realized that’s not a big enough fight. Now he’s trying to come this way,” stated the Norfolk native.

Even though ‘The Takeover’ hasn’t admitted to sending the package, his past incidents with several boxers aren’t helping him either. A few months ago, he had a similar incident with Terence Crawford and Gervonta Davis when he appeared on the Broadway Joel to pick an opponent between the pair. Lopez said, “Whichever monkey wants to get the banana! They say they are gorillas. I’m a lion. I eat them,” stating that he does not care and will fight either of them.

The statement attracted loads of backlash from the fans. Tank even issued a stark warning to Teofimo Lopez and declared, “I’m going slap the s**t out of him when I see him,” furiously. Terence Crawford wasn’t gonna get left behind and fired back with, “Teo is like the little kid that’s screaming for attention.” However, he refused to stoop any lower and moved away from the conversation quickly.

Teofimo Lopez immediately retracted his statement, revealing that he just wanted their attention and had no intention of being racist. However, it is something that will be associated with him, at least for the time being. This is exactly why the video he uploaded after Keyshawn Davis’ incident is not working in his favor.
