The hype is real. Moses Itauma continues to shine bright and dismantle his opponents. Yes, the parallels with Mike Tyson will continue and will even attract more traction with his recent knockout of Demsey McKean. However, the British boxer’s splendid win is now marred with controversy and a question: did he land an illegal punch?
Itauma, 19, stood across from McKean, 34, on December 21 at the Kingdom Arena as he looked to solidify his title shot credentials. He had entered the fight on the heels of a 7-win KO streak, where he didn’t go beyond the second round. The fans had expected a similar outcome, and he didn’t disappoint the fans. The southpaw boxer secured another first-round win as he dropped McKean with his two overhand lefts and improved his record to 11-0.
Itauma started the fight strong as he landed a first overhand left, which staggered McKean, and the latter took a knee. While McKean stabilized himself, it didn’t last for long. An eight-count was followed by another huge left, which marked the end of the fight. The referee waived off the fight after realizing that McKean couldn’t answer the count.

However, some fans asked questions about the first overhand left, which, when scrutinized carefully, gave the impression of an illegal back of the headshot. Anthony Taylor, the crossover boxer, also shared similar views when he took to his X handle. He wrote, “That was back of the head shot.”

But is it really the case? The fans and observers will have contrasting views the more they watch it closely. However, you can argue that there is some merit to the controversy and the referee could be more vigilant. But would that have any impact on the fight? We are not sure. On the other hand, the win pushed the heavyweight boxer towards the top of the division’s hierarchy.
Moses Itauma takes the praises
Dan Canobbio lauded Itauma and believed the fighter could be the future superstar. He penned, “What a statement by Moses Itauma. Holy wow. The future is bright.” Chris McKenna blasted the referee for his slow count and allowed the fight to go to the second count. He declared, “Not sure what Bob Williams was counting there for. Moses Itauma with an explosive first-round demolition on Demsey McKean. Going places.”

Kevin Iole shared similar sentiments. He announced, “Wow, what a KO for Moses Itauwa! Incredible. And that ref should have stopped it right away. What took him so long.” While there are varying opinions about whether the referee could have stopped the fight earlier or whether he failed to spot an illegal blow, it couldn’t be argued that Itauma was the dominant fighter. With this win, you can expect him to have a bigger name as his opponent next.
