Haney is the cause of his own troubles; had he not made so many comments about knocking out the 38-year-old, this performance would be a near-perfect one.

Instead, the constant predictions he made reduced the value of the victory for the division as well as himself.

After the fight, he said he wanted the knockout; that was his intention, going into the fight. However, when you look at the performance, it was a perfect boxing lesson.

At just 21-years ‘The Dream’ dominated from start to finish and arguably won every single round. Furthermore, it was against a high caliber opponent who had more experience than Haney. So really this performance should be talked about more.

Other lightweight stars mocked Devin Haney after his performance

The only problem for the undefeated champion is that, because he said everything that he did, it did not send a message to the other fighters in the division.

Instead, both Teofimo Lopez and Gervonta Davis mocked his performance. In a fight where Haney displayed great maturity, surely that is the last thing that it would lead to.

So does this mean Haney won’t make the big fights possible? The answer is obviously no. He is still the WBC lightweight champion of the world; eventually, he will fight one of the big names to unify the division.

And if he controls the fight like he did against Gamboa, he could even win those. It will be difficult now because he may not be as marketable as Ryan Garcia or Gervonta Davis, but he is still a world champion.

Writing off a fighter after one performance is the biggest mistake fans and opponents can make.
