There are few things forbidden for all, and if there were a list, offending Canelo Alvarez should be right at the top. But it has happened before, knowingly or unknowingly. It almost never bodes well for the person on the receiving end. This time around, it was the Mexican American stand-up comedian, Gabriel Iglesias.
Iglesias, also known as ‘Fluffy,’ revealed the incident of what transpired and how he incurred the wrath of the Mexican champion on his Netflix special, ‘Stadium Fluffy’. He started the segment by admitting that he had “offended someone,” whose name he shouldn’t have brought up. The comedian then candidly admitted he had offended Alvarez.
The 48-year-old comedian narrated how Ron White reached out to him and invited him to be part of his ‘Tribute to the Troops’ comedy show for the Nashville Network. As he was asked to do only a bit of 10 minutes, he thought of making jokes surrounding references to Las Vegas, a place that’s practically the fight ground for Canelo. Iglesias said, “Since everybody knows Vegas, so I started talking about boxing, and then I brought up Canelo.”

While doing his set, Iglesias comically suggested to the 61-2-2 record holder that he shouldn’t do interviews in English. The San Diego native acted out, “I said I just wish he would not do interviews in English. Because English is not his strong language… If you’re a professional fighter, you need to sound confident, engaged, threatening, aggressive, on point, in your face, and in Spanish he does. In English, not so much.”
Iglesias then performed a segment where he mimicked the 34-year-old boxer’s hypothetical interviews leading up to the Floyd Mayweather fight, in Spanish and English. It didn’t sit well with the super middleweight champion, and subsequently, some comments were shared. However, despite this, there is no beef or bad blood between the two, as Iglesias has been a big follower of Alvarez. The actor has even caught his fights live, and when there is a fight on the horizon, he asks for fans’ views and predictions as well.

The fans will be eager to witness what challenges ‘The Chosen One’ poses to Alvarez, as he has the power of the youth and also packs power behind his punches. But there is a gulf of skills between the two, and it all depends on how far Berlanga can close off that gap.
