Speculations are many, but answers are few. No one knows why Canelo Alvarez jumped the PBC ship and sailed into the free agent waters, at least for now. Some pin it on Al Haymon and the Mexican champion’s differences about the fight purse and the David Benavidez fight. Some believe Alvarez wanted to avoid big fights with the likes of Terence Crawford. But no one is certain. It appears ‘Bud’ has a response on this matter.
Crawford, the former undisputed champion at 147, recently weighed in on the controversial split that has lit up the boxing world. The long-drawn negotiations and rumors about Alvarez’s Cino de Mayo clash, opponent, eventually resulted in an unceremonious breakup between the PBC and the super middleweight champion. But what exactly happened?

The Omaha native, when asked whether Alvarez’s split was due to him avoiding big fights, including one with him, denied such a claim. In addition, he came clean on the reports of him facing Alvarez. While he had thrown his name in the rat race to bag Alvarez’s signature, it never gained traction or interest from the PBC hierarchy. Crawford thinks it’s Alvarez’s personal reasons.
“I don’t think that’s true. I think it’s his own personal reasons. Me and Canelo have never been in talks for a fight. That’s a fight I would take in a heartbeat,” Crawford said. Following this, the American boxer suggested that Alvarez wanted more control over his career. That’s what prompted such a move.
“But no, I don’t think he moved because of me and David Benavidez. I just think he’s handling his career the way he wants to,” Bud concluded.

After screening multiple names, including Jermall Charlo, the murmurs are of Jaime Mungia rising to the occasion and having the biggest fight of his career. It might turn out to be an all-Mexican showdown, with all the marbles on the line. However, Edgar Berlanga might also join the conversation, as his name also keeps popping up.

Meanwhile, there are clouds of uncertainty over Crawford’s next opponent and his return. With Errol Spence Jr. opting for cataract surgery and missing out on the timeline for the rematch clause to be valid, the much-awaited second fight between them is now off. As a result, his contract with the PBC is now over, and he, akin to Alvarez, is a free agent now.
