Devin Haney made waves in the boxing world after his emphatic victory over George Kambosos Jr. back in June. Haney became the undisputed lightweight champion, retaining his WBC lightweight title and adding the WBA/IBF/WBO championships to his collection.

The 23-year-old Haney outclassed Kambosos throughout the fight and scored a dominating UD victory over the Australian. A large part of his in-ring success can be attributed to Floyd Mayweather Sr. who trained Haney during the early stages of his career. However, it seems like the legendary boxing trainer cannot seem to remember his former pupil.

In an interview with TheBoxingVoice, Mayweather Sr. was asked to share his thoughts on Haney, who became the undisputed champ after working under him.

What’s your thoughts on Devin man? You worked with him so early and now he’s on disputed champ” the reporter asked. However, Mayweather Sr. wasn’t sure who the reporter was talking about, “Devin who?” said Mayweather Sr.

The reporter then clarified that he was talking about Haney, but Mayweather Sr. still had a hard time recalling the lightweight champion. It is not uncommon to see former boxers develop brain disorders later on in life. Due to the brutal nature of the sport, many boxers develop CTE and Alzheimer’s due to taking multiple blows to the head. Mayweather Sr.’s symptoms do point towards some form of memory loss that might have resulted from his boxing days.

What’s next for Devin Haney?

Despite outclassing Kambosos in their first meeting, Haney will have to take on the Australian boxer once again. The pair will meet in Melbourne for the second time this year for a rematch. The bout is set to take place at Rod Laver Arena on October 16 and is a chance for Kambosos to get his revenge. The reason a rematch was sanctioned was due to an obligation to the contract ahead of the first fight. The clause stated that, in case Kambosos lost, Haney would be bound to a rematch in Australia.

However. many feel that the result will be the same in the second outing as well. If the 23-year-old champion manages to overcome Kambosos, he will have several challenges to face, including Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis.
