Alright, gather ’round, folks! Ever since Ryan Garcia embarrassed Devin Haney in New York last month, things haven’t looked good for the super lightweight champion. And now, circumstances have reached a point where former world champion James Toney and Gervonta Davis’ coach Kenny Ellis have suggested ‘The Dream’ can’t even dream of defeating fallen champion Adrien Broner.
‘The Problem’ Broner’s recent performances have left much to be desired, with a fight coming up against Blair Cobbs on June 7. With Broner’s spotty resume and gaps the size of massive canyons, Toney and Ellis’ assessment during the Mill City Boxing interview may seem a little too far-fetched, especially considering Haney fought and defeated Ukrainian boxing icon Vasyl Lomachenko, albeit in a close fight. However, the question is, why do they think so?
James Toney’s Two Reasons for Broner’s Victory Over Devin Haney

The thing is, during the interview yesterday, the host of the show brought up Haney’s pursuit to get his loss overturned because of adverse findings in Ryan Garcia’s system, which is yet to see its conclusion. Also, Garcia tested positive a day before and on the day of the fight against Haney, and since that has come to light, the Haney corner has advocated for the fight to be declared a no contest.
Regardless, this seems to have rubbed James Toney the wrong way, as he said, “Hey look, he won’t beat [Adrien] Broner. I said it, he won’t beat Broner.” On top of this, as Toney said this, Davis’ coach Kenny Ellis responded saying, “I agree!” It’s worth mentioning that Davis and Haney have had their own differences, and ever since Ryan Garcia leaked the sparring footage between Davis and Haney, things have gotten worse.
Anyway, the host of the show, of course, probed further, asking for a justification! And Toney seems to have one, Toney stated, “Number one, Broner has experience. Number two, Broner can still fight,” with Ellis adding, “Broner can crack too.” Further justifying his point, Toney explained that Broner will be aggressive and his experience will prove too much for ‘The Dream.’ But is a fight between Broner and Haney really possible?
Bill Haney casts Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner aside
Well, a fight between former champion Broner and former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney is highly unlikely, to say the least. However, that has never stopped Broner from taking his shot, especially since ‘The Problem’ still seems to continue his gabby ways. All the way back in January, Broner openly issued a challenge to Devin Haney.

Taking to his Instagram stories, the 34-year-old called out Devin in a sternly worded message to Bill Haney. He wrote, “Ah @billhaney__ if you wanna get your son @realdevinhaney f**ked up, send the contract. I ain’t never ran from no man in boxing. Why would I run from your son—he can’t punch himself out a wet paper bag…”

In a subsequent response, Bill Haney provided an immediate retort, saying, “AB, you once represented the respect of boxing, the respect of the hood.” “Don’t worry about it, AB. We gon’ take it over from here. It’s the Devin Haney era. And you knew that we was going to pull up. It’s business, it’s not personal. Get back to doing what you doing brother, and Devin is doing what he’s doing: representing this sh!t to the fullest.”
Having said that, even though James Toney feels Adrien Broner could beat Devin Haney, the fight is unlikely to happen—ever. And even if it happens—somehow, Toney might be surprised with Haney’s boxing prowess. Do you agree? Or do you think Broner could beat Haney?
