Haney vs. De La Hoya: Who's in the right, and who needs to back down?

Devin Haney has landed himself in quite a mess, and now, Oscar De La Hoya has shared his thoughts online. Not that long ago, a clip surfaced online of ‘The Dream’ Haney engaging in an altercation with an individual at the Orange County Fair. The 27-second clip showed Haney and his entourage assaulting the unknown man close to one of the fair’s attractions.

While the details of why the altercation occurred are still up in the air, the clip clearly showed Devin Haney was the one who threw the first punch, followed by his friends who attacked the man relentlessly. The person in the video tried to defend himself, but police sirens in the distance scared Haney and his company as they bolted.

This incident attracted a lot of attention from fans and experts alike. One of those experts is Oscar De La Hoya, who reflected on the incident in his ‘Clap back Thursday’ videos. “In other news, Devin Haney had his comeback fight last week at the Orange County State Fair! I don’t know if you [have] seen the full video. Devin throws a punch at a civilian, all while standing in front of the farce wheel and he [misses]. Bro, your dream has officially turned into a f**king nightmare,” Oscar De La Hoya said, ridiculing Haney.

Seeing this, Haney quickly took to X, sharing his thoughts on Oscar’s comments, and asking him to give him the money he is owed. “If only Oscar would clap back with my money,” Haney quipped, referencing the now-declared no-contest Ryan Garcia vs. Haney fight. It’s worth noting that even Garcia had demanded his share of the pay-per-view money, which received a quick response from the head of Golden Boy Promotions.

Have an interesting take?

Oscar had claimed that the fighters were paid their share of the contractual money. And as for the pay-per-view share, that money comes in overtime and the boxers are paid accordingly. He had even suggested that the managers of the fighters already knew about this, so Oscar asked them to focus on their contracts instead of social media.

Regardless, the GB Promotions head isn’t the only one who has reacted to Devin Haney’s altercation in the Orange County Fair.

After the altercation at the fair, Haney’s rival boxer Ryan Garcia, who is currently serving a suspension, took to social media to mock Haney. Garcia remarked on X, “He couldn’t even drop a civilian,” referencing Haney’s alleged punch during the incident. Garcia didn’t stop there, criticizing Haney’s behavior at the fair, which he felt was inconsistent with Haney’s self-proclaimed status as a role model.

“You really punched someone while your whole team jumps one guy,” Garcia observed. It’s worth noting that Haney had responded to this in a now-deleted tweet, writing, “Based on the way you guys use that N word, you guys would probably be the best of friends.” In a follow-up post, Garcia sarcastically questioned how the boxing commission would react if a similar incident involving him were caught on camera, adding, “Thing is he punches so soft that maybe they will let it slide and call it play fighting.”

Having said that, Devin Haney is in some serious heat for attacking a man with his group of friends. While it’s a bad look for the former undisputed lightweight champion, he has claimed that the altercation was a result of some racist remarks. What do think about all this?
