On Sunday, Richardson Hitchins defeated Liam Paro via a controversial split decision (116-112, 116-112, 111-117) to crown himself as the new IBF super lightweight champion. After falling behind in the first four rounds, the mandatory challenger made a remarkable comeback to win the title. This was Paro’s first title defense and he succumbed to the pressure.
However, Hitchins is not the only one in the celebration mood tonight as the WBC super lightweight champion in recess, Devin Haney earned a payout of $25,000 by wagering on Hitchens to take home the win. While ‘The Dream’ wanted to show off his profit to the world, boxing fans were not kind to him as he received a barrage of scathing responses on his post.

After the title fight, the California native took to his ‘X’ and posted a printed statement from Hard Rock Sportsbook, showing off his profit. The statement showed the 31-0 boxer putting a wager of $10,567 on Hitchins who carried +145 odds. As Hitchins won the fight, it earned him an astronomical payout of $25.889.15.

Haney captioned the picture, “Money,” while flaunting off his winnings. As per BetMGM, Paro was the favorite going into the fight with the odds of -125 in his favor. The Brooklyn native was the underdog with odds of +110 in many sports books. The odds must have further tilted in the champion’s favor during the first four rounds where Paro was comfortably ahead.
Devin Haney must have placed his bet during those few rounds marking a perfect showcase of his boxing insights. Even though ‘The Dream’ had earned a substantial profit, the fans bombarded his comment section displeased and demanded he return to the ring.

One user wrote, “Isn’t Betting Haram??” while referring to the Islamic background of Devin Haney. Betting is forbidden in Islam as it is termed as unearned wealth, contradicting Islamic principles of fairness and hard work. Since Haney adheres to Islam, the user isn’t wrong in positing the question. Another fan mentioned the same and wrote, “This isn’t very Islam of you 😂,” once again questioning Devin Haney’s religious practices.
Another fan shocked by the wager wrote, “Wow. I didn’t know Paro was favored,” stating that they thought Hitchins was the favorite going into the fight. Till a few months ago, no one would have preferred Paro over the new IBF champion. However, after Hitchins’ disappointing performance against Gustavo Daniel Lemos and Paro’s gutsy performance against Subriel Matias to clinch the IBF title, the tables were turned. That fight showed the world a new side of Paro, which he was not able to bring out on Sunday.
Another fan demanded Devin Haney return to the ring and wrote, “Fight him next champ 👀.’ While the showdown between Hitchins and Haney is tempting, the fight is a long way down the road. ‘The Dream’ has asked WBC for some time to recover from his injuries and upon returning he would naturally want a rematch with Ryan Garcia, if that is possible.

Another fan not impressed by either Haney’s fighting style or the title fight between Paro and Hitchens, wrote, “Of course you enjoyed that boring fight 😅,” stating that the fight was lackluster. While this fan disliked the match, it was a solid match that showcased a gutsy and remarkable comeback by the newly crowned champion.
However, no matter the discourse, Devin Haney has earned a substantial profit while showing the world his keen insight regarding the sport. What are your views on Devin Haney’s wager? Let us know your thoughts down below.
