Gervonta Davis is having a pretty tough time right now! His fight against Lamont Roach Jr. has turned his life upside down, as it became the topic the boxing world can’t stop talking about. Now his career rival, former undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney, has shared his perspective on what went down on the night of March 1 in New York.
Roach Jr. came into the fight as a massive underdog, with zero support for his win. Everyone thought Davis would run him down like Flash chasing a turtle. However, in one of the biggest twists in recent boxing history, the WBA super featherweight champion matched Davis’ skills, power, and durability. Instead of the predicted Davis win, the fight ended with a majority draw. However, a key moment from the fight overshadowed Davis’ pristine record getting ruined. In the ninth round of the bout, Davis dropped to his knee and ran to his corner to get his face wiped. While it was revealed to be grease from his fair dripping down to his eyes, the fact that the move went unpunished by referee Steve Willis, even though he had started a ten-count, did not sit well with the fans.
Everyone is scrutinizing the move, and now, the NYSAC is investigating it, claiming some “technical issue” prevented them from reviewing it during the fight. Even Roach Jr. has submitted a request to turn the result in his favor. As the world awaits NYSAC’s decision on the matter, Devin Haney appeared in an interview with The Ring to disclose his take on the fight and the no-knockdown decision.

With the dynamic Davis and Haney have, it’s not difficult to guess what Haney said, but ‘The Dream’ made some good arguments to get his point across. “I thought it was a good fight overall,” he began. “I always knew Lamont was, you know, he wasn’t coming to lay down.” Having known Roach Jr. since childhood when they competed in the amateurs together, Haney was surprised by his performance.
“He was coming there to fight, but he did a lot better than I thought he would,” Haney added. As for who won the fight, Haney confidently said, “I thought [Roach Jr.] won the fight, personally.” And then there’s, of course, the no-knockdown ruling! Haney felt, “No knockdown — that was unheard of. That’s the first time ever I’ve seen it with my own two eyes.”
Haney shares a contagious relationship with Davis, and many have demanded a fight between the pair, which has failed to materialize to this day. ‘The Dream’ is currently slated to square off against Jose Carlos Ramirez on May 2 in Times Square, New York in the Fatal Fury card alongside Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez in separate fights.
Regardless, Haney isn’t the only one left baffled by the no-knockdown decision!

Oscar De La Hoya shares his take on Gervonta Davis vs. Lamont Roach Jr.
Golden Promotions head Oscar De La Hoya has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Gervonta Davis’ majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr., believing Davis should have been deducted a point for taking a knee in round nine.
“In any sport, you can take a timeout, football, basketball,” De La Hoya said on DAZN’s Ariel x Ade: The Boxing Show. “Not in boxing, there’s three minutes for a reason, [and] there’s a referee for a reason.”

“If you go by the rules and what the rules are in New York, then that should be a point, he took a knee, that should be an automatic point.” While Davis’ fate hangs in the balance because of the NYSAC, both fighters have claimed that they are open to a rematch. However, the fate of a potential rematch remains uncertain.
