A few weeks ago, WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis sent the boxing world into a frenzy when he announced that 2025 would be his last year in boxing. The Baltimore native claimed that he has grown tired of this sport and wants to spend more time with his family.
‘Tank’ further claimed that the only reason he is still in the sport is because he wants to earn enough money before bowing out for good. However, not many people are buying this. While few think that there might be a different reason for retirement, Devin Haney completely denied any chance of that happening.

While talking about his potential return to the ring in 2025, reporters gathered for the media workout day in London asked Devin Haney for his opinion on Tank’s retirement announcement. The question amused ‘The Dream’, as he had no idea about it. He confirmed the statements with the reporters and asked, “He’s retiring?” with a confused look on his face.
However, the San Francisco native was quick to dismiss the announcement and declared, “Naah, he’s not retiring.” Haney believes Gervonta Davis still has many fights left to make and is far from done. “A lot of big fights to be made out there and Tank knows that,” stated the 31-0 boxer.
He further doubled down on his claims and added, “I don’t think he going to retire. A lot of unfinished business.” Devin Haney’s statement makes sense as ever since ‘The Dream’ has made a jump to 140 lbs, Tank had the chance to sweep up the lightweight division and become an undisputed champion.
However, despite this huge opportunity, Davis has not taken advantage of the situation. A fight with the likes of Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko will do wonders for him and will also change the narrative built around him about choosing easy fights.
Haney is not the only one who thinks that Tank is being honest with the fans. A few days ago, Floyd Schofield Jr.’s father, Schofield Sr. threw massive shade on the WBA champion and suggested that Tank is retiring to avoid facing his son.

Is Gervonta Davis scared?
While speaking to talkSport, Schofield Sr. revealed a private conversation he had with Gervonta Davis about his son. “Gervonta said ‘I would never get in the ring with that guy’,” claiming that Tank wants to avoid his son.
Not only that, Schofield Sr. thinks that the Baltimore native took the retirement decision because of his son. “And two years ago I told the world that when Floyd gets up to that level where he’s a mandatory to Gervonta, Gervonta will retire,” stated Floyd Schofield Jr.’s father claiming that he had already predicted this move. He further added, “Everybody else who has seen Floyd [ducked him]. He buckled Devin Haney [in sparring] and Devin ran up two weight classes to get away from him.”

Right now, Floyd Schofield Jr. is preparing for the biggest fight of his career against Shakur Stevenson on the February 22nd Riyadh Season card. It will be Kid Austin’s first-ever title fight and the result will make it clear whether Schofield Sr. is right about his son or not.
Well, no matter what actually happens, Gervonta Davis’s announcement has already caused a frenzy in the boxing world. Everyone is talking about it and if Tank is serious about his decision, he might not even care what others say about him. He might target a big payday before actually bidding farewell to the sport.
