The images of Devin Haney flooded the internet this past Friday. The visuals are amusing too. He is suited up. However, the headlines read about how he made a court visit to file a 12-page suit against Ryan Garcia. Their heated rivalry has gone from a squared circle to a courtroom. It seems the American fighter has issued much-needed clarification on the scenario.
Haney, 26, filed a lawsuit against Garcia, 26, in September after he lost the fight where he took a knee three times. While ‘KingRy’ bagged the fight initially on the judges’ scorecards, later reports of PED abuse surfaced. The complete debacle ended in him getting slapped with a year-long suspension and the fight being overturned to a no-contest. But Haney, at 31-0, believed the damages he received in the fight were irrevocable. Both bodily and reputational. So, he filed a suit seeking damages for battery, fraud, and breach of contract.
But did the world champion go to the court and finally knock on the door for justice? No, it didn’t happen. He turned to his X handle and addressed the reports of him attending the court to lodge the suit formally. He wrote, “I ain’t go to no damn court.. foh.”

This might come as a relief to Garcia’s fans. However, Haney hasn’t hinted at dropping the lawsuit either. So, the fans might have to wait for a while to get a clear picture. But one thing is sure—the Garcia rematch has now another layer to it because of this lawsuit.

The Devin Haney rematch gets personal for Ryan Garcia
Garcia explained the situation of their rematch to Ariel Helwani, especially while being on the receiving end of a lawsuit. Contrary to popular belief, it has only fueled him more. “It’s a little bit personal now. [Devin Haney] sued me… That’s a real legitimate lawsuit that I’m going through… I think the rematch would be huge. They think that I cheated. If they feel that way, let’s run it again and I’m gonna do him worse,” he said.
Garcia, at 24-1, is lined up to meet Rukiya Anpo in the middle of the ring on December 30 in Tokyo under the exhibition rules. He took the fight as a tune-up fight, which could help him with future fights. What’s more? The Victorville native’s suspension ends in April, and that’s when he is hoping to target a big fight. What about the Haney rematch? Will it happen then? It could be. But it remains to be seen how the lawsuit affects their potential rematch.
