Accolades, world titles, and prestige. Devin Haney has attained it all this year. In May, ‘The Truth,’ defended the undisputed lightweight title against former champion Vasyl Lomachenko. Moreover,  he did the unthinkable by moving up in weight to challenge Regis Prograis for the WBC super-lightweight belt. What appeared to be a bold ask ended up being a walk in the park.

The undefeated boxer remained undefeated and dethroned the champion in his foray into a completely new weight class. After a highly successful year, is he worthy of becoming the fighter of the year? Well, according to Haney, he deserves a more respectable title.

Devin Haney has had a brilliant year. The mere fact that he was willing to relinquish his titles in the lightweight division to challenge the champion in his first fight in the super-lightweight division is a testament to his ambition. So, as the year comes to an end, the fans speculated if he has done enough, and more than his counterparts, to be declared the fighter of 2023. Haney took cognizance of this debate and shared an opinion of his own.

According to him, he is not the fighter of the year and that is because he considers himself to be the fighter of the decade. He took to X., expressing this thought in the name of god, and stated, “Ion care bout no fighter of the year ima b fighter of the decade. InshaAllah”

Haney’s assertion leaves us with a thought. Does his assertion have merit? He has been an undefeated, multi-weight champion and most importantly, for the most part, dominant. However, has he done enough to be compared to the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford this decade, or even his rival, Gervonta Davis?

One can speculate and debate about the aforementioned question. However, Floyd Mayweather Sr. has seen the two spar, back in the nascent stages of their career. And in a very assertive and decisive statement, he claimed that Haney was superior, to an extent, “It ain’t even worth asking because it was a one-way deal. Only one man controlled it, and that was Devin Haney,” said Mayweather Sr.
