Though boxing is a highly individualistic sport, there’s no denying that a boxer would fend for himself without a team. He is merely the sharp end of the spear. It is the team that prepares him and sharpens the blunt edges. They strategize his next bouts, chalking plans to thwart the foes’ approach. But what happens in the life outside the sport? Do familiar variables work seamlessly in the personal sphere as in professional life? Floyd Mayweather Jr. found the panacea to his success and shared it in an interview.

Boxing’s first billionaire, unlike many who preceded him, who lost their way with money, Floyd Mayweather Jr. proved his business acumen through brilliant investments that accrued over the years. Fans might remember last year while speaking to Jabari Young, a senior writer with Forbes, and he talked about a deal to the tune of $20 billion! So how did he become hugely successful both within and without the ring? A boxing prodigy, his triumph with gloves is largely understandable.

But what about Floyd Mayweather Jr., ‘The Tycoon’? Are all the accomplishments his to claim credit for? Instead, the former champion highlighted what he rates as one of his most significant victories. In an interview, noted speaker and entrepreneur Andrew Cordle asked Mayweather Jr., “Is there any achievement that you have done outside of boxing that you’re super proud of that maybe the fans don’t know about?” The latter replied, “Just surrounding myself, building my team.”

Then, probably surprised, the wealth strategist asked, “The team?” Mayweather Jr. said that they were crucial to him. Calling his team members the reason for his success, he said it is all about having astute and wise people near at hand, “...So I’am very, very proud of myself for choosing the right pieces to the puzzle.” When Cordle asked, “What gave you that insider ability to know to surround yourself?…Where’d that come from?” The former world champion replied, “There are always people around, but it’s just trial and error. [I’m] just happy with who I chose.
