In the wake of Terence Crawford‘s win against Errol Spence Jr. and way before Canelo Alvarez‘s title defense against Jermell Charlo, Oscar De La Hoya had claimed ‘Bud’ would beat Alvarez “anytime.” According to him, Crawford was a “master” who would make the Mexican boxer look like a “child” inside the ring. In his opinion, there was a great difference between Crawford and Canelo in terms of “talent alone.”

Additionally, De La Hoya believed Crawford would also bulk up to Alvarez’s size. In this context, he even criticized Canelo’s footwork and claimed that the Mexican boxer walked on “cement.” Remarking on Crawford’s footwork coordinated with his upper body, De La Hoya confidently announced that ‘Bud’ would win. However, in light of Alvarez’s latest performance against Jermell Charlo, De La Hoya contradicted himself by claiming that Canelo would take Crawford “to deep waters.” Here is what he said.

Since Crawford is comparatively taller, has “incredible” footwork, and understands how he shall maintain the distance, De La Hoya earlier believed Alvarez would lose to ‘Bud’. “It’ll be a no-brainer,” he said. Although he promoted the Mexican fighter from a promoter and a fighter’s point of view, the ‘Golden Boy’ said, “Crawford will beat him in a master performance, any given day.” However, now, besides praising Crawford, De La Hoya acknowledges Canelo’s power in a recent conversation with FightHype.com.

Fighter vs. fighter and talent. Obviously, Crawford is the craftier boxer. But Canelo has the size, he has the power. It’s like what t I said, he will run right through him. It will be a tough fight,” stated the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.

However, De La Hoya also feared that it would be a one-sided bout for a few rounds.

‘Golden Boy’ thinks Canelo would eventually take Crawford to “deep waters”

Despite acknowledging Canelo’s power, De La Hoya felt “it will be a one-sided fight for maybe seven rounds.” However, according to ‘Golden Boy’ after the event round, Canelo would start to attack and eventually put Crawford in a fix. “And then Canelo starts attacking. He starts to take it to deep waters,” he added. “And the power will eventually be too much. Will it be a great fight? Will it be a huge event? Absolutely,” he said in conclusion.
