Prior to its announcement, hardly anyone would have thought that Canelo Alvarez would be engaging in a bout against the undisputed champion of the light middleweight division, Jermell Charlo. Thus the boxing world was left baffled as the news came out that Alvarez would be facing off against him instead of Jermall Charlo. However, the self-proclaimed, younger brother of the Charlo took the challenge and is fighting Alvarez for a shot at becoming the new Undisputed champion in the super middleweight division.

It’s a feat that is only surpassed by Terence Crawford, who recently defeated Errol Spence Jr. to become the undisputed champion in two weight divisions. However, Charlo could have done the same if he hadn’t been stripped by WBO of his title. Notably, Alvarez has only been defeated twice throughout his career. First was his loss against Floyd Mayweather and second against light heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol. The Mexican boxer is apparently prepared to use Mayweather’s tactics to deal with Charlo in their upcoming bout.

It is very well known how Mayweather dominated Alvarez in their bout around 10 years ago. The difference in experience showed itself and Alvarez has always openly talked about the bout which managed to reach the gate of $20 million. With the sale of over 2.2 million PPVs, the estimated figure for the total revenue for the fight was around $150,000,000. Moreover, in an episode of ‘The Making of Canelo’, the boxer revealed that during the fourth round, Mayweather had rubbed his eyes. This led him to punch Mayweather’s leg.

However, Alvarez did learn a lot from the match-up and fans have noticed how he improved his head movement after the loss. This undoubtedly helped him reach the heights he is at now. Thus recently in an interview with FightHype.com, when he was asked about how would he deal with Charlo’s “good jab” and “good movement”, Alvarez appeared unfazed. He quickly demonstrated head movement similar to Mayweather and his iconic shoulder roll and stated, “I can do it. Got it”. It appears that he is prepared to deal with the aggressive Charlo just like the former world champion.

Bob Arum thinks Alvarez has a better winning chance against Crawford

Even though both Crawford and the 5’8 Mexican boxer have their fights still due, the talks of a phenomenal bout between the two are already going on. For the past few weeks, the rumors of their potential matchup have been making waves. This came after Crawford set his sights on Alvarez’s titles as he moved his attention from Charlo to the Guadalajara native. Recently Crawford’s promoter Bob Arum gave his own predictions for the bout.

In an interview with ProBoxingFans, he admitted “You’d have to favor Canelo in the fight because he’s the bigger and stronger guy. But we promoted so many Crawford fights, and he is a tremendous, tremendous talent.”

However, he also added that he wouldn’t count out ‘Bud’ in any fight. Crawford appears to be ready to one-up Charlo and move up 3 weight division for the title bout. Even though Alvarez didn’t show much interest in the beginning, he seemed to have had a change of heart later on. He appears to be much more open to the bout, however, for now, he is only eying the Charlo fight.
