Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has filed a lawsuit against his promoter. So Alvarez sought a minimum of $280 million in damages from Golden Boy Promotions, and broadcast partner, DAZN, in 2020. However, this would mean a break of an 11-fight contract and a loss of around $365 million. The lawsuit alleged a breach of contract stemming from disagreements about the fights scheduled for Alvarez.
Apparently, DAZN reportedly envisioned a highly anticipated trilogy bout between Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin as a centerpiece event for a fight in September 2019. While Golden Boy appeared to be on board with this plan, the lawsuit suggests Alvarez may not have been consulted or was hesitant about the trilogy fight. This miscommunication has resulted in the lawsuit and this created a drift between Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya. So much so that De La Hoya didn’t leave a chance to disrespect the undisputed champion.

Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya throws shade at Canelo Alvarez, claiming a prime De La Hoya would have easily beaten Canelo in one of the interviews. The comment comes ahead of Canelo’s upcoming fight against De La Hoya’s protege, Jaime Munguia, on May 4th. This is the first time the two have been on opposite sides of the ring since Canelo’s messy split from De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions in 2020.
Canelo opted for icy silence when asked about his former promoter, but De La Hoya relished the opportunity to fire back with some verbal jabs. In an interview with ESNEWS, the reporter talked about the awkwardness that loomed between De La Hoya and Alvarez during the press conference. De La Hoya didn’t hold back with his words, and he answered, “It’s okay…he knows who his daddy is.”
So, currently, it’s a bit surprising that De La Hoya also talked about how he wants to work together with Alvarez, and this wasn’t too long ago as well. But what did De La Hoya say about working together?

Oscar De La Hoya isn’t hiding his excitement for the upcoming clash between Canelo Alvarez and his fighter, Jaime Munguia. For months, De La Hoya has been positioning Munguia as the heir to Canelo’s throne. He first dubbed Munguia the “next Mexican superstar” and confidently predicted a knockout victory over John Ryder in January, which Munguia secured via stoppage in the 9th round.

Now, with Munguia facing Canelo on May 4th, De La Hoya sees an opportunity for a monumental upset. De La Hoya relishes the chance to see his fighter challenge Canelo, a boxer he once guided to superstardom. Talking to FightHype, he said, “We feel that if we can work with promoters the way we’re working with Canelo, the way we’re working with PBC, fights happen. And I’ve been preaching this for a very long time. It’s finally here. I‘ve been promoting this fight before it even happened.”
