Is Canelo Alvarez's obsession with Mayweather holding him back from achieving new heights in boxing?

Canelo Alvarez is one of the most decorated boxers of all time. Many fighters would sacrifice everything to achieve the kind of success that the current unified super middleweight champion has attained. His career, nearly flawless, is marred by just two blemishes, one of which continues to linger in his mind.

On September 14, 2013, Canelo suffered the first defeat of his career at the hands of Floyd Mayweather. Now, 11 years later, he is preparing to step into the ring as a unified champion against Edgar Berlanga at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Although he has come a long way since that loss, Canelo is still chasing redemption for the one stain as he revealed recently.

Ahead of his multi-million dollar fight against Berlanga, Canelo sat down with DAZN Boxing to discuss his upcoming fight. In the interview, the champion talked about his journey, his next challenge, and how he has changed over the years. It was like a peek at his career and how his perspective has changed over the years.

During their conversation, Canelo was asked if he would like the chance to face Mayweather again. Without hesitation, he responded that he would jump at the opportunity. Despite knowing it’s unlikely, he still yearns for a rematch to avenge the loss that has followed him throughout his career. “Yes, of course. I would love the opportunity to take revenge. We know it is not going to happen. But yes, I would love to get rid of the thorn,” said Canelo without missing a beat.

The best thing was that DAZN had asked the same question to Canelo a few years ago and his reply was exactly the same. In the previous interview, the 61-2-2 boxer stated that he when he fought Money Mayweather, he thought he was ready, but the “lack of experience” got to him. But now that he is a “more mature fighter and with more experience the fight would (be) different.”

Canelo has faced questions about a potential rematch with Mayweather numerous times. Earlier this year, during the ‘No Golf No Life’ tournament, Canelo reportedly turned down a multi-million dollar offer for an exhibition fight against the now 47-year-old Floyd Mayweather.

Not interested in an exhibition fight

According to multiple sources, Canelo rejected the deal, stating that he wasn’t interested in leaving Mexico for an exhibition match. He made it clear that his desire for a rematch isn’t driven by financial gain, but rather by a longing to face Mayweather in his prime.

“I don’t know what they call an exhibition fight, but I don’t know if I would leave Mexico. But I’m not interested in an exhibition fight against Mayweather. The truth is that I’m not,” Canelo Alvarez said firmly.

Canelo made it clear that he was not interested in any kind of fight with Mayweather just for the sake of money. He wants revenge against the prime Floyd Mayweather who is completely fit and raring to go. But that is not possible right now, and the champ has to make peace with the fact.
