WBC ‘Interim’ light heavyweight champion David Benavidez isn’t just stepping into the ring with Cuba’s David Morrell—he’s bringing the heat and some serious bad intentions to the party! The pair is slated to lock horns on February 1st at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas—live on Amazon Prime Video. In the meantime, Benavidez has revealed his intentions for the fight.

Benavidez recently moved to the light heavyweight division, securing a unanimous decision win over Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Similarly, Morrell climbed to 175 pounds and defeated Radivoje Kalajdzic to win the vacant WBA ‘Regular’ light heavyweight belt. With just over a week left in the fight, Benavidez appeared in a ‘Gloves Off: Benavidez-Morrell’ YouTube video posted by PBC, expressing his thoughts about the fight.

The ‘Mexican Monster’ has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with, and now, he has warned what he plans to do to Morrell. “I am going to make an example out of him,” Benavidez said. “For the rest of the light heavyweight division to see I am not playing with nobody.” However, Benavidez’s threats didn’t end there.

In a bone-chilling confession, the knockout artist claimed it could be Morrell’s last fight. “He is in for the hardest fight of his life,” Benavidez said. “To be honest with you, I don’t think he is going to fight after this fight. He is probably going to retire.” Benavidez must be looking to live up to his claims, as he failed to land a fight against Canelo Alvarez.

And the high-risk, high-reward fight against Morrell is his ticket to prove he is the best fighter out there. Regardless, this clip was later shared on Instagram by ‘All the Smoke Boxing,’ which quickly caught public attention, as utter chaos erupted in the comments.

Fans defend David Morrell

With a statement as bold as Benavidez’s, he might have expected a wave of supporters, but things didn’t exactly turn out his way. One user warned Benavidez about underestimating David Morrell. “Don’t sleep on Morrell, he’ll surprise the world,” the user commented. With the amateur record ‘O.D’ has, an upset next month won’t be a surprise.

Meanwhile, this user could not listen to Benavidez’s threats with a straight face. “It’s all talk, he [is going to] win a dicey decision and act like he deserves Canelo,” the user retorted. However, the David duo seems to have built up quite an animosity since the announcement of the fight, they really might be gunning for each other’s heads.

The next user felt Benavidez might be a little too confident about his fight. “Dude 1st loss incoming 😂,” the user predicted. Gvozdyk exposed Benavidez isn’t as formidable as people previously thought, so Morrell has a good chance of handing the ‘Mexican Monster’ his first loss.

Someone else was confident that the upcoming bout wouldn’t go well for Benavidez. “Morrell will easily beat Benavidez,” the user claimed. However, if Benavidez has worked on the issues he faced in his previous fight, Morrell could find himself in a world of trouble.

While Benavidez didn’t find the support he may have expected, that doesn’t mean he didn’t have any. “That’s why people don’t want to fight him,” one user wrote. A win against Morrell can further his chances of landing a fight against the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch.

That said, David Benavidez is clearly locked in for his upcoming fight. Whether David Morrell could deal with Benavidez’s pressure is yet to be seen. But what do you think about the threat Benavidez made? Do you think he can destroy Morrell?
