Right after David Benavidez’s win over David Morrell last week, the Ring Magazine on X, announced, “David Benavidez has now confirmed his position as the WBC mandatory challenger,” setting up his position as a potential opponent to the winner of Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol rematch in Riyadh on February 22.
But is this just talk, or are there concrete plans in motion? To shed some light on what’s next for David Benavidez, he recently appeared on The Ariel Helwani Show. Here he not only revealed the prospect of facing the undisputed light heavyweight champion next but he also confirmed his attendance at the next event for a possible face-off with the winner.

During the segment, Benavidez opened up about his talks with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh. He revealed that he had recently spoken to His Excellency on the phone after his victory on Saturday. David Benavidez further revealed that they planned to travel to Saudi Arabia after Alalshikh invited him to personally be at the Beterbiev vs. Bivol rematch on the 22nd. “I think we’re going to go over there February 22nd,” he stated. This was done expressly so he could figure out who he was fighting next. He thus confirmed that his next fight would be under Turki Alalshikh’s Riyadh Season card.

He continued, “If Bivol wins, or if he(Beterbiev) wins,” emphasizing that he is eager to see if the fight will go the way it went last time around in October. However, either way, he remains open to fighting them both. “So yeah, we will see what happens. We got a lot of big things coming up,” the 28-year-old stated.
David Benavidez further made it clear that he’s not only ready to face the winner of Beterbiev vs. Bivol but also eager to prove himself in bigger fights. “I think it proved everybody how much heart I have. So me against anybody bro. I’ll bet the house on me against anybody. And I’m just looking forward to keep making history,” the WBA (Regular) and interim WBC light heavyweight champion added.
However, despite his ambition, he isn’t the only boxer with his sights set on major opportunities in the ring. Let’s take a look at who else is calling for a fight with David Benavidez.

Caleb Plant eyes Benavidez but there’s a caveat
Even though the 30-0 boxer has his eyes fixed, Caleb Plant expressed his desire for a rematch. It was in 2023 when the Nashville native lost in a unanimous decision against David Benavidez. The 32-year-old, however, bounced back to his track with an impressive knockout victory against Trevor McCumby in September last year, claiming the WBA ‘Interim’ super middleweight title. And it seems like he still seeks for redemption.
But on one condition. Which is? While talking to Fight Hub TV, the Sweethands mentioned, “If David can make 168, we can run it back but I don’t know if he can.” If you don’t remember, David Benavidez fought him in the Super Middleweight division. And, after the Phoenix native’s victory over Caleb Plant, he fought and won one more match against Demetrius Andrade in the same division.

Later, failing to secure a match against his mandatory Canelo Alvarez, the 28-year-old decided to move up a division. This means, that if Caleb Plant is to fight with David Benavidez, the latter needs to adjust his weight class yet again, which might not be possible as the WBC interim light heavyweight is aiming for something else.
With that being said, do you think David Benavidez will fight next – Beterbiev vs Bivol? Would you like to see a rematch between Benavidez and Caleb Plant, or should Benavidez focus on light heavyweight?
