David Benavidez is one of the scariest champions in the world of boxing currently. The former two-time WBC super middleweight champion, never losing the belt inside the ring, is now on the verge of becoming the top contender for the undisputed light heavyweight championship, if he wins on February 1 against David Morrell. And he is already looking to leverage his position to fulfill his long-awaited dream.
The Mexican Monster has been chasing a fight against Canelo Alvarez for well over two years now. However, since the unified super middleweight champion didn’t like the way Benavidez approached him for the fight, the Mexican star gave him the boot. Canelo even went as far as to demand $150 million to consider the fight, thus prompting the 29-0 boxer to move up a division to light heavyweight. However, David Benavidez still hasn’t given now. According to the Interim WBC Light Heavyweight champion, this time he has a plan.

While appearing on the Nightcap show with Shannon Sharpe and Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson, David Benavidez shared the only possibility that will force Canelo Alvarez to accept a fight with him. “I am going to predict the future right here. The only way I see this fight happening is me winning all the belts at light heavyweight, Winning all the undisputed titles,” began David Benavidez in response to a question by Johnson.
He thinks that winning the undisputed title at light heavyweight can give him the leverage to challenge Canelo for a catchweight fight putting both the undisputed titles on the line. “Then me and Canelo fight at the catch weight of 172 or 173 for the 168-pound titles and the 175-pound titles,” explained the 28-year-old.
Even though David Benavidez currently holds only the ‘Interim’ WBC light heavyweight, his upcoming fight against David Morrell will propel him to the top of 175 lbs division. A win here would make him the prime contender to face either Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol for the undisputed light heavyweight title. So, his dream might not be that far-fetched.
Furthermore, the Mexican Monster thinks that it is the only way to entice Canelo Alvarez into accepting a fight. “I think that will entice Canelo to fight because that would make this fight a hundred times bigger,” he said hopefully. Given the fact that both Alvarez and Benavidez just want to fight and give the fans the best matches, this plan can work.
Canelo Alvarez doesn’t care about money
Recently, the Guadalajara native appeared in an interview with Mike Coppinger for the Ring Magazine podcast where he shared golden advice with the young fighters. “I always say to the young fighters, ‘Hey don’t look [at] boxing just for the money. The money comes. Do your thing, do good and with discipline with love with everything and the money is going to come,” said the Mexican superstar.

On the other hand, despite being one of the biggest names in boxing currently, David Benavidez fought on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin last year, just because he is “a fan of boxing. I know how much it means to get two big fighters on one card… I didn’t really care about… being the co-main event or whatever, I just thought that… it would be a dope night for the fans.”

Despite their intense and heated rivalry, the duo shares an unmatched love for this sport. This means that if an opportunity to put two undisputed titles on the line presents itself, in no way any of them will reject it.
Will a situation like that present itself? We will get our answer by the end of the year, possibly. However, till then, let’s wait and hope that David Benavidez’s prediction comes true because this Mexican all-in fight against Canelo Alvarez will be box office hit if it does happen.
