While Diego Pacheco was fighting Shawn McCalman in the ring at Fontainebleau, Las Vegas, on Saturday night, David Benavidez was caught inebriated on camera. The incident happened midway through gym mate Pacheco’s fight when a representative from DAZN Boxing sat down with Benavidez for his thoughts about the fight.

Despite being drunk, Benavidez was able to slur out his opinion during the interview. So, turning to social media the very next day, ‘The Mexican Monster’ apologized to all his fans and followers for showcasing a side of himself that he might not be very proud of. Boxing writer Dan Rafael later posted Benavidez’s apology on X (formerly Twitter).

Following Saturday night’s debacle, Benavidez wrote on his Instagram story, “I just want to take this time to apologize to all my fans and to the people [who saw me drunk last night].” Benavidez went on to blame “one [too] many drinks” for his actions during the interview and promised, “This will never happen ever again.”

Moreover, Benavidez is currently in talks to face Ukraine’s Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the light heavyweight division. The fight is likely to transpire in June, something Benavidez is hoping will propel him to face the winner of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol for undisputed status. However, that’s not really the opponent Benavidez has been dreaming about.

Despite his move to 175 pounds, Benavidez really wants Canelo Alvarez to fight him. However, the legendary Mexican superstar doesn’t seem to be in the mood to just give away the opportunity to make, as Canelo claims $150 to $200 million. So, the undefeated boxer took aim at Canelo for contradicting himself.

David Benavidez asks Canelo Alvarez, “Come, shut me up”

After Canelo Alvarez demanded such a humongous amount to fight Benavidez, many, including Benavidez, were left wondering why the undisputed super middleweight has so little interest in fighting Benavidez. As far as Benavidez is concerned, Canelo is clearly scared of entering the ring opposite him.

So, while appearing on the recent Cigar Talk podcast, Benavidez didn’t hold back his criticism. “If I [talk] so much s**t, come shut me up. You’re getting a good paycheck for it, come shut me up. But the simple fact that he’s asking for $150/$200 million—come on, bro. And he continues to say I’m not worth anything. It’s funny that you’re [going to] ask for $200 million for a fighter who’s not worth anything… I really do think he’s scared of me,” said Benavidez.
