It’s not something boxing fans would want to hear. After all, they had been waiting for such a long time! For a moment it seemed dreams would blossom into reality. Several reports suggested that the talks for the Canelo AlvarezTerence Crawford fight have seemingly inched closer to an agreement. However, it appears the historic showdown between the two P4P greats may not happen.

Ring magazine updated the news through its social media handles. It didn’t take much time before fans streamed in to share their thoughts and views on the development. The comments unfurled a common theme. Fine – if it’s not Crawford. Instead, give an opportunity to David Benavidez. ‘The Mexican Monster’ has been calling out Canelo Alvarez for a long time. Frustrated at the lack of an opportunity, despite his mandatory status, Benavidez moved up a division and enthralled fans and pundits with an outstanding performance against David Morrell. His compelling arguments for a Canelo matchup didn’t need any further proof.

Say goodbye to Canelo vs. Crawford

Details about formalities such as weight class and rehydration clause also emerged. Needless to blame the fans if they felt that the fight was a done deal. After all, they were getting a chance to watch an epic duel not seen since Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao went to war or Muhammad Ali and George Foreman‘s ‘Rumble in the Jungle.’

Precise details on why the fight has been called off remain unconfirmed. Concerns about the sheer weight gap between Crawford and Alvarez had been a prevalent issue. The prospects of Crawford moving up two divisions concerned many experts and former champions.

Canelo vs. Crawford off—Is Benavidez the real contender fans have been waiting for?

Have an interesting take?

Perhaps it was time; David Benavidez came on the scene. Let’s check what a few fans had to say.

But David Benavidez is still around!!

The development presented an opportunity. This fan pleaded, “Please, finally, Benavidez. Eddy was at the Morell fight; please be a sign. 😭😭😭.” Speaking with Ariel Helwani, David Benavidez, who won the title eliminator against Morrell, opined that he would prefer Dmitry Bivol to win the rematch with Artur Beterbiev. Given that Bivol defeated Canelo Alvarez two years ago, beating him at the title challenge would make his case much stronger.

But the next one appeared crestfallen. “Damn, was hoping for it 😐,” they said. However, they added, “Now Crawford vs. Charlo/Fundora and Canelo vs. Benavidez 👏.” Crawford has an opportunity to become a historic three-division undisputed champion. So if not Alvarez, he could initiate unification face-offs. But that also means crossing paths with Sebastian Fundora. The two have already had a round of online back-and-forth.

Criticisms were aplenty. “Canelo wants an easier fight,” said this fan. Many believe that Crawford’s mastery over techniques would prevail in the ring. Hence, fearing a third career loss, they suspected whether Alvarez would opt for a fight.

However, this user felt otherwise. “Terence Crawford once he realized it was almost a DONE DEAL. ✅. “On second thought, I don’t need money THAT bad….” 😂😂😂,” they mocked. If some acknowledge Crawford’s technical craftsmanship, then some still remain in awe of Alvarez’s boxing skills, especially his body shots and defense. The prospect of a career-first loss sounds quite alarming.

This follower sounded quite happy, though. They said, “Exactly what had to happen!!! Give us Canelo vs. Benavidez! 🔥! Cut the bs I’m tired of the bs!!!! Make Boxing Great Again!!! Fashoo.” What’s the point in making a champion climb two divisions up and fight when there’s an equally competent opponent available in the nearby ranks?

Fans will have to wait and watch. On February 22, Beterbiev and Bivol are slated for a meetup.

Based on the outcome, David Benavidez will make his moves. If he ends up becoming the light heavyweight division’s new undisputed champion, then Canelo Alvarez may perhaps run out of reasons to turn down a fight.
