It’s just a day’s time. Fans will find out whether ‘The Mexican Monster’ has finally succeeded in making inroads into a new realm. David Benavidez marks his move once again to Light Heavyweight after years of being in the super middleweight division and being a champion there twice. He will face former world champion and Olympic medalist Oleksandr Gvozdyk. The duo will clash for the WBC interim light heavyweight title in a matter of few hours.
Reportedly, the ascending move came as efforts to bring on a fight with Canelo Alvarez came to naught. David Benavidez was, in fact, the WBC mandatory challenger. He will enter the ring following the successful super middleweight interim title defense against Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade in November last year. Given the fact that he is departing from a lower division to a higher one, it’s reasonable to expect that the share of his purse split would have gone high. Let’s have a look at how ‘The Mexican Monster’ has fared economically over the past few years.

How much did David Benavidez earn from his last boxing match?
On November 25, at Las Vegas’ Michelob Ultra Arena, David Benavidez met former middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade. For the latter, who had been out of the ring for close to two years, it was the second fight of his comeback year. By the time the fight reached halfway, it became clear why ‘The Mexican Monster’ was the clear favorite to win and was deserving of his fearsome reputation.

Unable to withstand the onslaught, ‘Boo Boo’ followed the adage that discretion is the better part of valor and decided to retire before the seventh round. Per the available sources, the match made David Benavidez richer by some $7 million. For a boxer, whose net worth reportedly hovers somewhere between $1 and $5 million, it was a career-high payday.
Multiple websites cite Davis Benavidez’s net worth hovering somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million. Undoubtedly, the Phoenix, Arizona native has earned most of his money as a prizefighting boxer. But it should be noted that his overall fortune includes his investments in side hustles such as his clothing business. The venture includes sales of a variety of apparel items like t-shirts, sweatpants, caps, and other casual wear.
David Benavidez’s career earnings and net worth
Details remain scanty about Benavidez’s early paydays. The information, by and large, remains restricted to his recent fights. For instance, for the 2017 Ronald Gavril fight, he received nearly $400,000. Two years later, on September 28, 2019, he faced Anthony Dirrell. The fight not only made him a world champion a second time but also fetched him the first six-figure paycheck.

Consider the facts: for the 2022 title fight against the Canadian David Lemieux, it seems he received $350,000 and 60% of the share in the PPV earnings. Then last year, when he went for the first title defense against Caleb Plant, he took home roughly $3 million.

So according to a story done on ‘NYFights’, David Benavidez’s guaranteed purse for his next fight against Gvozdyk stands at approximately $2 million. So, adding up his share of the revenue generated by PPV buys, his earnings should be somewhere in the vicinity of $6 million. But what about his adversary? Is he going to take anything more? Apparently not, it seems. ‘The Nail’, the article states, should be able to take home an amount touching $1 million. The split includes a base payout of $500,000 along with $400,000 to $500,000 from his share in the PPV sales.

It must be understood that each win by David Benavidez bears witness to an increase in his popularity. He has become one of boxing’s most notable draws. Thus, a change in weight category, which, who knows, might lead him to a line-up against the likes of Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol, suggests a higher payday.
