WBO champion, Billy Joe Saunders, has a massive chance to defeat Canelo Alvarez in a super middleweight title unification fight on May 8. Being the undefeated world champion, ‘Superb’ Saunders can rightfully enjoy some advantages over the P4P king. But, the veteran doesn’t seem to have a lot of believers in his corner.

Akin to him, Canelo Alvarez is also a legitimate veteran and has won championships in four distinct divisions. He will stand as the favorite against Saunders. Although it doesn’t take away anything of Saunders’s abilities, several analysts have pointed out how the Brit can fall short in front of the Mexican prodigy.

Veteran trainer, Dave Coldwell, connected with Fred Talks Fighting and shared his opinion on the upcoming super-middleweight title unification battle. While he hailed Billy Joe Saunders’s impeccable achievements, Coldwell also doubted him against a mighty Canelo Alvarez.

Speaking on it he said, “You don’t just need elite level attributes and you need to be able to use those attributes and you also need to have the mentality as well. Billy Joe Saunders takes quite a lot of the boxers. The problem is that there is a big difference between, when you compete at a good level to when you are competing at an elite level.”

He added, “And Canelo Alvarez has competed at the top, the highest level, regular for years and years. Billy has been a bit inactive, and he’s blown hot and cold in his performances. He has definitely got the skill set and the ability to cause problems for Canelo but whether or not, over the course of 12 rounds. That’s enough to win any of the rounds or to keep Canelo off him.”

Will Canelo Alvarez win against Billy Joe Saunders?

Alvarez’s past opponent, Callum Smith, has already envisioned the Mexican to win against Saunders. Meanwhile, Coldwell also predicted the same, citing his absolute favor for Canelo Alvarez.

He said, “I think Canelo wins the fight to be honest. I struggle to see Billy winning the fight.”

Since returning against Smith in December, Canelo Alvarez has been super active with his business. He has bagged the WBC, WBA, and Ring titles at 168 lbs by beating ‘Mundo’. And then defended them against mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim via KO in February.

Now, he will fight one of the best super middleweights in Saunders in May. On bagging a win, we can expect Alvarez to fight IBF titleholder Caleb Plant this year.
