Danny Garcia wants to become a three-division champion. Another belt in a new weight division would be a great way to bid farewell to the sport. The 36-year-old has fought quite sparingly in the last couple of years. In the last four years, he has had two fights. Seventeen years in the boxing business — spending a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and battling inner demons, Danny Garcia might just be able to achieve what he wants this time around. As he goes up against WBA middleweight champion Erislandy Lara in the co-main event of the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga headliner on September 14, he is going to try his best before he retires for good.
Having previously won titles in super lightweight and welterweight divisions, hanging up his boxing gloves as a middleweight champion would be the ultimate crowning moment that his legacy needs. That being said, let’s explore the roots behind Garcia’s fight moniker ‘Swift’ which also aptly describes his style of boxing.

The Philadelphia native has seen a steady rise in the world of boxing. Having a stellar amateur career in which he went 107-13, winning multiple national championships, Danny Garcia made his professional debut in 2005. As his moniker suggests, Garcia was quick on his feet and had a devastating left hook. However, his nickname had nothing to do with how he fought.

Surprisingly, his nickname had everything to do with his fashion choice. From a very young age, Danny Garcia was fashionable, taking extra care about what he wore, and it impressed quite a few people at the gym. From a casual comment, the roots of Garcia’s fight moniker sprang.
“One day when I was 12 or 13, I walked into the gym, wearing my usual getup, and someone looked at me and said, ‘Look, it’s young swift. You always got that swag about you.’ From there, the name stuck,” Garcia recalled in an interview.

Danny Garcia’s early life
Danny Garcia was born and raised in Philadelphia, home to the second-largest Puerto Rican community in the country, but his mother and father are both from Puerto Rico. Another important thing that must be pointed out is that Danny Garcia is proud of his Puerto Rican heritage. Garcia proudly proclaimed at the press conference ahead of his title defense fight against Mauricio Herrera in 2014 — “Puerto Rico is my blood.”
Danny Garcia’s father Angel Garcia, made sure that he passed on his learning of the ‘sweet science’ to his son. Naturally, young Garcia developed a love for the sport from a very young age. At the age of ten, Garcia’s father took him to the Harrowgate Boxing Club in Philadelphia, where he began training. Since then, he has built an illustrious career in boxing with his father by his side.

Safe to say, most of young Garcia’s time was spent training in a boxing gym under the tutelage of his father who was a hard taskmaster. Nevertheless, the hard hours spent in training during his childhood kept him away from a life of crime, and bore fruits later, giving him a life of luxury that he now enjoys.
