Ahead of the marquee clash, we take a look at their records and analyze how they compare to each other.

Daniel Jacobs has a boxing record of 37-4 and has faced the likes of elite fighters like Gennadiy Golovkin, Canelo Alvarez, and John Ryder. However, many of his fights with the boxing superstars ended in defeat. He faced a decision loss against Golovkin in 2017, followed by another loss on points to Canelo Alvarez in 2019. Meanwhile, his last defeat came against John Ryder in 2022.
Still, ‘The Golden Boy’ is a two-time middleweight champion of the world, who holds wins over world champions like Caleb Truax, Peter Quillin, and Sergio Mora.
Jacobs also had to spend time away from the ring in 2011 after suffering from a rare form of life-threatening bone cancer called osteosarcoma. He went on to make a full recovery but is still reeling from the effects of operation-induced complications. That might be one of the reasons why he had stayed out of the ring for a long time since his last fight.
On the other hand, Shane Mosley Jr., son of Hall of Fame boxer and former world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley, has a record of 21-4. His early boxing career was marred by heavy defeats. He lost in his fourth pro fight and would incur three further defeats over the years. However, Mosley Jr. is on a hot streak, having scored four consecutive wins in his previous fights. His last loss was in 2021 against Jason Quigley.
His winning streak has seen him ranked in the top five of both the WBO, WBA, and WBC while he is placed seventh by the IBF. Compared to Jacobs’ resume, he has no high-profile names in his win column and has picked up the same number of losses in his career as his opponent. He also has a lesser number of professional fights than Jacobs.
Speaking to the reporters about his son’s upcoming matchup, Hall of Famer Shane Mosley said, “I think this is the biggest fight. I think him getting a win over somebody like Dan Jacobs solidifies him…..take him seriously as being a world champion. Mosley believes that his son’s “speed” and his “youth” will give him an advantage over the “older” Jacobs.

At 33, Mosley Jr. is four years younger than Jacobs, which could play in his favor. However, Jacobs boasts an impressive boxing resume, having fought the who’s who of boxing greats. In his last 10 fights, Jacobs has an 8-2 record and has an elite level of experience. Thus, beating Jacobs might not be an easy feat for Shane Jr as he hasn’t faced an elite name in the professional boxing circuit.
Jacobs has also talked about how his motivation for beating his opponent on July 6, is to get back into title contention. He is eyeing a third world title before he hangs up his gloves. “If I can go in there and look really good maybe even get a knockout, it’ll put me right back into that position because my ultimate goal is to be a champion in another division but a three-time overall,” he said.
That being said, let’s take a look at their boxing records and the physical attributes of both fighters to see who would have an advantage over the other.
Daniel Jacobs vs. Shane Mosley Jr.: Age, Height, Reach, Weight
Mosley is the younger fighter who has still got a few years ahead of him. Meanwhile, at 37, Daniel Jacobs will be looking to wind down his boxing career shortly. Looking on the brighter side, his experience against elite boxers will come in handy against the relatively younger Mosley. Shane Jr. does have a height and reach advantage over Jacobs. He is 6′ 1″, with a 77-inch reach, beating Jacobs, who is 5′11″ with a 73-inch reach. Shane Jr. could use this to his advantage, and keep Jacobs at range while fighting on the outside.
The ‘Miracle Man’ missed weight for the fight, coming in at 169.2lbs. Meanwhile, Mosley Jr weighed in at 167.6 lbs. The super middleweight limit is 168 pounds. Even still, Mosley Jr has agreed to go on with the fight, therefore, ‘Miracle Man’ can use the extra weight to his advantage and deliver stronger punches. A glance at the boxing records would tell you that with a KO ratio of 81.08%, eclipsing Mosley’s measly 57.14% Jacobs has a clear power advantage.

On paper, the younger fighter, Shane Jr should be beating the older Jacobs. Quicker reflexes, accompanied by the height and reach advantage, should play in Mosley’s favor. But the 37-year-old pugilist’s boxing experience and knockout power cannot be ignored.

Update: Shane Mosley Jr. defeated Daniel Jacobs after a 10-round unanimous decision with scores of 99-91, 99-91, and 100-90. This arguably marks the biggest win of Mosley Jr.’s career. Even though Jacobs showed flashes of brilliance, Mosley landed better shots early on and left his opponent with a cut over his left eye from a head clash. After the win, Mosley challenged WBA middleweight world champion Erislandy Lara to a bout.
