Will Dana White's special rules ruin the essence of boxing or bring much-needed excitement?

UFC President Dana White has been celebrating the success of UFC 306: Riyadh Season Noche, where he put on one of the best UFC shows ever. On the back of this success, the UFC juggernaut is looking to expand its magic into boxing. Although nothing is confirmed yet, White’s genius brain has ventured into different sports before, so this wouldn’t be the first time. Remember Power Slap anyone?

The 55-year-old has had a sort of bitter history with boxing. And he has expressed his thoughts about venturing into the sport previously. It looks like those ideas are progressing and are very close to becoming a reality now.

White’s entry into boxing has been a matter of speculation for a very long time. But it seems like with the backing of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, the man who footed the bill for Noche UFC, we can see these speculations become a reality.

This potential takeover by the 55-year-old might present boxing in a brand new avatar. The format might be similar to that of UFC, with even promotions like Matchroom Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions being involved. This will create a monopoly for White in the boxing world, just like he has in the MMA. Furthermore, this new league might feature a similar format to the UFC’s contender series with 5 rounds in each match. White has always believed in promoting and finding new talent from the grassroots level and this league will provide ground for that.

Boxing promoter Rick Glaser broke the news on Xx, stating that the talks of a potential partnership between White and HE Turki Alalshikh are moving forward. “Breaking, #DanaWhite is going to dip his toe into #Boxing again, this time with @Turki_alalshikh , & they are going to do a Contender type series of what could be 5 round fights. Welcoming back @DanaWhite!!!,” wrote Glaser with excitement.

This won’t be the first time for White in boxing as he took an active part in promoting the once-in-a-lifetime fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor in 2017. But with each passing year, his interest in the sport started to decline, but an offer from Alalshikh seems to have changed that. White has stated in previous interviews that he would like to create his own boxing company rather than be part of an existing one. And with HE Turki Alalshikh wanting to start a boxing super league, their interests are aligning perfectly.

This partnership between White and the Adviser to the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia has all the factors to be a success. And considering this is not the first time that White has ventured into a different sport, things might turn out to be fruitful for the 55-year-old.

A mastermind in cross-promotion

Dana White has demonstrated time and again his ability to build successful partnerships across industries. His recent collaboration with WWE is a perfect example. In a groundbreaking move, WWE held its first-ever event inside the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada on June 9, with NXT Battleground taking place in the iconic Octagon. The event featured former UFC fighter Shayna Baszler in a match against Lola Vice, further blurring the lines between MMA and pro wrestling.
