Is the lack of random drug testing in Tyson vs. Paul fight a threat to boxing's credibility?

The upcoming fight between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson has had its share of controversies. From Tyson’s age-related issues to customized rules for this fight, everything has been under a microscope. Each passing day adds a new chapter to this hotly debated fight. The biggest one of them all is the drug testing, which for some has even overshadowed the return of Mike Tyson to the ring.

The duo of Tyson and Paul will undergo tests a day before the eventual fight on November 15 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington. But SNAC founder Victor Conte isn’t convinced. After a recent update, which he became aware of, he went on to raise several concerns regarding the nature of testing while also questioning the organizers responsible for the event.

Panel Test to determine boxers’ readiness for fight night

For most fights, boxers have to undergo random drug testing in the lead-up to the fight for VADA to sanction them fit for the bout. Conte has been vocal about the lack of random drug testing for the upcoming Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight. Therefore, he once again questioned the procedure and listed down everything regarding the testing that had been made public.

Conte also revealed that he has heard from various sources that this fight will involve only one big panel test rather than a singular individual test. This means that the authorities will check for multiple markers at once as part of a panel rather than testing for every single indicator separately.

“Reportedly Jake has said there would be a “big panel test” as in singular TEST likely at the fight. The Texas commission has said that they are “subject to” random testing.” While a panel test will be efficient, its efficacy in detecting a wide range of PEDs is still questionable. Also, since there wasn’t random drug testing, the results of the panel test will come out long after the fight has wrapped up.

That is why Conte demanded random testing for both fighters. Something that the Texas commission promised, but so far, there has been no random testing. He then mentioned the comment by Mike Perry where the latter stated that “there was NO D**G TESTING when he fought Paul in Florida.”

All these incidents have forced Conte to think that “Florida has inadequate drug testing.” And according to Conte, “The Texas Commission may even do less testing,” than the authorities in Florida. According to the BALCO founder, a lack of clarity in this regard will hurt boxing as a whole.

Concerns over lack of transparency for the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight

Conte stated, “I believe the lack transparency about drug testing in boxing is damaging to the health of the boxers themselves.” He contended that the boxing record keepers are afraid to ask questions about the boxers’ safety and health as it may result in them losing “their credentials.”

The 74-year-old then questioned the authorities involved in the event and asked whether “those who are afraid to disclose the truth about drug testing for their events may have something to hide?”

Victor Conte had previously questioned the lack of transparency about the testing for the upcoming fight. A few weeks ago he called out the open use of testosterone by Mike Tyson in the months leading up to the fight before its postponement from July to November and how dangerous it can be for the 58-year-old. According to the Brooklyn native, since Tyson had revealed his usage of Synthetic Testosterone after his ulcer treatment to get back into shape faster, the looming danger to his health on fight night remains apparent.

Reflecting back on it, in his recent tweet, he contemplated the dangerous nature of boxing and how “Brain damage is real in boxing,” and the lack of random testing can only spell danger. For him, “the truth matters,” and if not done right, it can lead to serious consequences. While TDLR and both the boxers have time and again allayed the fears while promising diligence in regard to boxers’ health, the concerns raised here by Victor Conte cannot be simply dismissed.
