When Devin Haney comes to mind, Ryan Garcia is often the first name that follows. The duo have been rivals since their amateur years, a rivalry that became unsavory following their first professional clash on April 20 of last year. However, Garcia may not be the only fighter with whom Haney shares a longstanding rivalry.
Fans still talk about the leaked sparring footage between Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis. The two exchanged jabs at the Mayweather Gym, where tensions eventually escalated. Both have their own versions of what transpired during the session. In the professional arena, despite being colleagues in the 135-pound division, the duo never squared up in the ring. Davis mentioned Haney on his famous ‘hit list.’ Their paths eventually diverged in 2023, when Haney joined the light welterweight roster. But their rivalry has continued to simmer. The ‘champion in recess’ traveled to London for an open workout. Thus far he has remained tight-lipped about the suggested comeback in March. A similar response followed when asked about Gervonta Davis’ upcoming fight against Lamont Roach Jr.

During a media session, one reporter asked Haney about Davis’ surprise announcement at a press conference. For those who don’t know, the lightweight champion shocked everyone when last year at the press conference of the Roach Jr. fight, he revealed plans to retire from boxing by the end of 2025.
Haney appeared a bit surprised at first, responding, “He’s retiring?” before expressing disbelief with a smile. “I don’t think he’s going to retire, you know, with a lot of unfinished business,” he replied. However, the Gervonta Davis questions persisted.
Another reporter asked, “What do you make of the Tank versus Roach fight? Do you think it’s a fight that Tank should have at this point in his career?” With a mysterious smile, Devin Haney responded, “No comment.” He did, however, mention that he and Lamont Roach Jr. have been on good terms since their amateur days. “I’m happy that he got the opportunity, and, um, that’s all I can say,” said Haney.
Now it might have puzzled everyone why Devin Haney didn’t have anything to say about the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr.
When ‘Tank’ Fired back
Last September, citing an update from Mike Coppinger, Ring Magazine reported that a matchup between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. was being considered for a potential November or December showdown. It also listed Jose ‘Rayo’ Valenzuela as one of the alternate options.
“😂😂😂😂😂,” reacting to the news Haney responded. But it didn’t take long for Gervonta Davis to catch wind of the swipe and launch a riposte. With an abundance of smiling emojis—twice the number Haney used—the Baltimorean shared pictures of the humiliating knockdowns Haney suffered at the hands of Ryan Garcia on April 20.

Davis named Haney as one of the targets on his hit list. But it remains uncertain how a match between the two would unfold. It’s likely that the bigger Haney won’t move down a division for a fight, regardless of how lucrative it may be. While Davis has fought at 140 pounds, he has mostly remained at lightweight, so it’s unclear whether he would budge from his current position.
