17-0 as a pro, WBA (Continental) 147 lbs champion, Conor Benn, could have locked horns against anyone in the deep welterweight roster. However, he wanted to experience the toughest challenge amongst all and elected to defend his title against Samuel Vargas on April 10.

Already a prime prodigy of the active boxing world, ‘The Destroyer’ is on the brink of bagging a world title bout imminently. Hence, his continental title defense would play a pivotal role in crafting the journey.

While it could have put some added pressure on the 24-year-old, Benn revealed why he actually opted to face Vargas. The Brit orthodox spoke with Sky Sports boxing to reveal his overview of his opponent.

“He is as tough as they come, he’s (Samuel Vargas) has been in with the best fighters of our generation. He has been in with Errol Spence, Danny Garcia, Vergil Ortiz Jr, Louis Colossa, and Amir Khan. Name a much better fighters than them,” said Benn.

Benn saw Vargas fight against Amir Khan in the UK, whilst he was on the undercard, and that’s when he knew he wanted to share the ring with the elite punchers. Prior to his title defense, Benn appeared delighted as he remembered the incident.

‘The Destroyer’ continued, “You know when I see him (Vargas) come over here and fight Khan, I was on the undercard. And I thought I fancy my chances. Is it a big step? Yeah, of course, it’s a big step. But you have to take these steps in life, and not just in the ring. You have to take a gamble.”

Benn is an explosive puncher. Boasting 11 KOs in 17 wins, he might want to win his fight against Vargas via stoppage. Nevertheless, he might also be comfortable in going to the distance, especially when a victory will help him go for the bigger matchups in the future.
