Fans have been waiting a long time for the Sebastian Fundora vs. Errol Spence Jr. bout. The fight has been in the works for nearly a year, but somehow always fell apart at the last moment. Reports suggested that the duo would lock horns in October last year, but that never happened.

A few days ago, reports of the fight being planned for early 2025 on Premier Boxing Champions’ pay-per-view slots on Amazon Prime Video became rampant. While boxing insider Rick Glaser showed his doubts even then, it looks like it might finally happen. A new report by former ESPN senior boxing writer Dan Rafael suggests that the fight is almost locked in for March 29th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. While fans are joyous over the announcement, Spence’s former trainer Andre Rozier had a few concerns to add ahead of the potential bout.

Sebastian Fundora is the heavy favorite for Rozier

Rozier sat down with YSM Sports Media to talk about the potential clash. He made it evident that if the showdown happens, he will pick the unified Light middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora over his former student. He claimed, “Errol took a savage beating in that Crawford fight. There’s no way there weren’t repercussions,” referring to the July 2023 clash between ‘The Truth’ and Terence Crawford.

Crawford humiliated Spence in the undisputed welterweight clash. ‘The Truth’ was knocked down three times in that fight en route to a TKO loss and hasn’t fought since. According to Rozier, the repercussions of that fight are more than what fans know before focusing on other struggles of Spence in the last few years.

“If that’s not bad enough, his history in being in car accidents and everything else, it won’t bond well. That’s collateral damage on the body. So I am going to favor Fundora,” claimed the former trainer. The Long Island-born boxer has been involved in two major car accidents in his life.

On October 10, 2019, in Dallas, Texas, he drove his Ferrari over the speed limit while under the influence during the early hours. He lost control, resulting in the vehicle flipping several times. To make matters worse, Spence got ejected from the vehicle as he was not wearing his seatbelt. Thankfully, there were no major injuries other than facial lacerations and the 34-year-old made his comeback a year later, in December 2020. However, many fans don’t know that in 2020 a driver rear-ended Spence three months after this incident, and he later revealed it nonchalantly in an interview.

A third incident was far more frightening as his car collided head-on with a vehicle driven by an underage, unlicensed driver who ran a red light. Despite the severity of the crash, Spence walked out with only minor injuries. He later shared his gratitude for walking away unharmed from such a deadly accident.

According to Rozier, these accidents will have in one way or another affected Errol Spence Jr. mentally if not physically. The trainer showed his worry over the psychological makeup of the 34-year-old and how it will affect his return.

The many troubles of Errol Spence Jr.

Rozier claimed that after Spence parted ways with veteran trainer Derrick James, “He doesn’t have a trainer. I don’t know who he’s going to work with. That’s going to be just a small moment in time. It’s a lot of things going on,” and this can prove too much for the Texan. He further added, “It won’t bode well in a fight like that.” A unified title fight is a lot of pressure and can affect Errol Spence Jr.’s mental health even further.

According to Rozier, the only chance Spence has at winning is if “Fundora makes a mistake.” However, considering how the WBC and WBO super welterweight champion made his comeback after Brian Mendoza‘s fight, it is a long shot. In April 2023, Fundora suffered his first and only career defeat against Mendoza. He later made the amends by shocking Tim Tszyu to claim the WBC and WBO titles.

Rozier thinks that the unified champion won’t make the same mistakes again. “I think he learned from that last knockout that he received from making a mistake not to do it again.” Rozier accepted that Errol Spence Jr. was tough and that Fundora wouldn’t be able to knock him out. However, winning the fight is a different thing altogether and Fundora would be a heavy favorite.
