De La Hoya addresses the incentive behind MMA fighters turning to boxing

In the world of MMA, fighters’ pay is a polarizing issue. However, Dana White has passionately defended the pay structure within the organization. De La Hoya, on the other hand, disagrees with the notion. He stated that boxing is a more lucrative sport than MMA and the mere fact that UFC fighters cross over to the ‘Sweet Science,’ is a testament to the same. Reflecting on the same, in an interview, with ESNews, he stated, “Why do you think MMA fighters are going into boxing? And crossing over for the payday. That is it, that is the bottom line.”

Moreover, De La Hoya lauded fighters crossing over from the UFC because he appreciates their will to compete in a new sport against formidable opponents. He cited the example of Sean O’Malley and appreciated his courage to challenge elite boxers. “That is why you are seeing this other kid with the pink hair. These guys are warriors man. Calling out guys like that? Take balls. I am happy for them. Come make all the money. Come to our side of the street and make the real money.” Said De La Hoya.

De La Hoya is not only a promoter but also a stalwart of the sport. However, it bears mention that he does not consider MMA to be an inferior sport. Instead, back in 2022 he even revealed collaborating with the UFC and making amends with White.
