Undisputed super-middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez recently emerged victorious in his trilogy bout against Gennady Golovkin. Following his victory, many wondered who the Mexican phenom would face next. Many felt that Saul would like to get his revenge on Dmitry Bivol after his upset loss to him back in May.

Moreover, former super-middleweight champion David Benavidez also emerged as a contender for Alvarez’s spot at the top of the division. However, despite his mandatory status as the next title challenger Benavidez was swiftly dismissed by Alvarez. In an interview with Behind The Gloves, he stated that Benavidez was not yet worthy of challenging him due to his underwhelming resume. “I fight anybody. My entire life, anybody. What are you think? I don’t want to fight with one Mexican Benavidez. But look, I hear his dad talk a lot of sh*t. But look, what he’s accomplished. Nothing. One single champion, Anthony Dirrell. Please, don’t disrespect myself. Please, guys” Alvarez said.
David Benavidez fires back at Canelo Alvarez
The 25-year-old star has now responded to Alvarez taking shots at him as he sounded off on the undisputed champion. In an interview with Boxing Scene, he doubled down on his position as the mandatory title challenger. Moreover, he stated that there was a reason why boxing has a ranking system and that he was next in line for a title shot. “Everything he was saying is bulls**t. There’s rankings in the WBC for a reason. I’ve won two back-to-back title eliminators for a reason and won the interim belt. Man, that’s the fight everybody is talking about. ” said Benavidez

He also claimed that nobody cared if he had fought only one world champ and openly challenged Alvarez to a match. “Who f—— cares if I fought one world champion? If I’m so easy like he says and he’s not scared to beat me, come beat me.” he added.

A bout between the two seems inevitable if they continue to beat every challenger in their division. However, as is the case with boxing, many super fights like this never get booked or take place years after it was supposed to. Benavidez is now set to face another former world champion, Jose Uzcategui, as talks of a potential bout in 2023 have emerged.
