The combat sports world was left in shock as the unexpected unfolded last night. The scorecards read a majority decision draw, with both Glenn Feldman and Steve Weisfeld scoring it 114-114, whereas Eric Marlinski scored it 115-113 in favor of Gervonta Davis. However, it made little difference in the end. The spic and clean image of Gervonta Davis’ record now had a blot, masterfully dealt by the underdog Lamont Roach Jr. But that wasn’t the only twist.

In the 9th round, Davis made a misstep that could’ve easily and, in fact, accurately been scored a knockdown—had referee Steve Willis caught it immediately instead of letting it slide with a mere warning. Alas, he didn’t. But if he had, Roach would have walked home with a victory last night. So why did he take a knee?

To clear the air in a post-fight interview, Gervonta Davis revealed the real culprit: it was the grease from his fresh new hairdo that got into his eyes and temporarily blurred his vision. This might have been the reason why, throughout the fight, Gervonta Davis kept looking at the referee, hoping to bring their attention to his burning-eye problem. However, that mistake proved costly when, during one of those instances in the fourth round, right after a clinch, when Tank looked toward the referee, Roach caught him with a good, well-timed left hook to the head. Even the commentator remarked, “He took his eye off the ball there.” Well, jumping on his blunder, Claressa Shields had an important lesson to impart with Gervonta Davis.

She took to X and posted, “I can’t believe tank looked at the ref and got hit. Rule #1 never take your eye off your opponent. But boy is he pissed 😅 5th rd he bout to come out aggressive!!!!”

This kept happening throughout the fight, and Tank kept getting hit. Lamont Roach Jr. was also confident in the performance he gave. So much so, that he felt he had done enough to take home the win. In the post-fight press conference, he said, “I did enough to get the victory. I am a spectacular fighter. I told you from the beginning that I got skills to pay the motherfu**ing bills. I am just glad I gotta show it honestly.”

But above all, it was the Newark native who had the most to gain from the fight. After all, he had the chance to watch it live as his longtime rival fumbled the challenge from Roach Jr, and it seems he’s more than satisfied with the outcome.
