The third iteration is where most franchises flop—think Godfather III or X-Men: The Last Stand. But Amanda Serrano vs. Katie Taylor III is ready to deliver a knockout blow that could make women’s boxing the next best thing. Two sensational matches, two sold-out arenas and they are going to do that again on July 11.

Ireland’s Bray Bomber has kept Serrano at bay completely, twice, leaving the Puerto Rican star 0-2 in their epic rivalry. The Real Deal is itching to flip the script in her 52nd career fight. However, Taylor’s defense and counter-punching have her stumped, something she has been unable to penetrate. As the trilogy looms closer, Claressa Shields is ready to step up as Serrano’s savior, but there is a catch to this lifeline.

Claressa Shields: No more wild 1-2’s

Recently, FightHype TV was able to catch Claressa Shields for a quick chat about women’s boxing. Naturally, the upcoming Taylor-Serrano fight came up. Curiously, the interviewer asked, “What does Amanda Serrano have to do to get an actual victory against Katie Taylor?” While the Flint native had no idea why she got this question, she is ready to help out Serrano if asked. “Why’d you ask me that? I know what she has to do. If she asked me I would gladly,” Shields claimed.

Claressa Shields knows that a fight against Katie Taylor will be tough no matter what. “She’s(Serrano) in there with somebody who’s been boxing since she’s a little kid. She’s(Katie) strong, she’s durable. You know what you can hurt her with and you know what you can’t hurt her with,” she explained.

While the T-Rex refused to reveal the strategy on camera- a smart move, she revealed a glaring mistake in Amanda Serrano’s game that has stopped her from achieving victory. “I feel like Amanda just feels she can just come forward just with those strong punches and just beat everybody. When I think last fight she lost on counters. It wasn’t that she lost in combat, she lost to counters. She’s throwing two punches and then she gets hit with four. So I think that she needs to maybe ask counter to her game,” she posited.

Now it’s on Amanda Serrano to decide if she wants Shields’ advice. Either way, the most decorated female boxer has promised that she will be at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, cheering on a night that’s rewriting women’s boxing history.

Biggest night for women’s boxing

Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor are not only among the few female boxers to complete a full trilogy, but they will also headline the first-ever all-women’s professional boxing card. According to reports, MVP’s newest signee, Alycia Baumgardner, will also feature on the undercard.

While MVP has not yet revealed the other fighters on the card, we can predict that their new signings, unified bantamweight Dina Thorsland, rising prospect Nat Dove, WBC 108lbs Youth world champion Naomy Valle, and TIME Person of the Year Ramla Ali will be featured on the Netflix event.

The event is a testament to Jake Paul‘s drive towards providing an equal platform for women in boxing and so far, he has done exactly that. The July 11 event on Netflix will prove to be another milestone in MVP and Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano’s career, something they can look back on with fondness. However, losing here might sour that memory for one of them.
