The rising star who wants to follow in the footsteps of Norfolk’s most famous boxer, Pernell Whittaker, now aims at a world title by the next year. He has quite a few options in front. However, it’s Gervonta Davis‘ door where he knocked first.

Ever since his open call out to the lightweight champion, the narrative has taken on new directions. Fans saw Kenny Ellis join the fray. He suggested Keyshawn Davis first clear the pending account with archrival Andy Cruz. A video that features Keyshawn Davis going on a tirade against Gervonta Davis received an enthusiastic response from an altogether different corner. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and world champion Claressa Shields seems quite impressed by ‘The Businessman’s drive to chase boxing greatness.

A resume that doesn’t stand out

The living legend was responding to a tweet featuring a short clip that showed Keyshawn Davis censuring Gervonta Davis. Going full steam, the Norfolk-born fighter questioned the lightweight champion’s resume.

“I want to fight him, bro, because he has been tricking the boxing game for too long. He has been tricking the boxing game for too long… made sh*t look good. He made sh*t look better than what it is,” said Keyshawn Davis. Throwing shades at the Baltimorean’s boxing credentials, Keyshawn Davis asked whether he ever fought any opponent of ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard or Marvelous Marvin Hagler‘s caliber.

According to ‘The Businessman’, everyone knows that ‘Tank’ Davis picks fights that he knows he will win for sure. Watching Keyshawn Davis’ outburst, Claressa Shields couldn’t control her laughter. “Key, so crazy 🤣🤣🤣 the passion he got is unmatched! I want to see the fight!!”

What lies ahead for Keyshawn Davis

Keyshawn Davis could be eyeing a title shot. However, the bigger question is whether the route to the world championship and boxing legacy should cross through ‘Tank’s path. Upcoming prospect Robert Meriwether, who fought on the Keyshawn Davis-Gustavo Lemos card, shared that a fight between the two Davises sounds fantastic. However, as things currently stand, he, like many others, feels there are very few reasons compelling enough to entice Gervonta Davis to fight ‘The Businessman’.

“There’s no reason for Tank to take that fight right now; either you know Keyshawn’s not a champ right now and he’s not really bringing the crowd like Tank would or, um, you know, he’s bigger, so you know he’s going to have the reasons not to fight him right now,” said Meriwether.

However, he emphasized that if the Norfolk-born star continues performing as he did against Gustavo Lemos, a showdown against ‘Tank’ Davis could be on the cards. As Kenny Ellis mentioned, Keyshawn Davis could first avenge his amateur defeats against Andy Cruz. A win would cement his position in the division. He could also challenge Denys Berinchyk for the WBO championship. He can stake a claim at the IBF title. If he secures either of the belts, then a title unification should pit him against Gervonta Davis.
