Did Serrano-Taylor really shine, or was it overshadowed by the Paul-Tyson spectacle?

On November 15, Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor produced a boxing masterclass in front of 70,000 fans in AT&T Stadium. Reportedly, 50 million households worldwide watched two of the biggest women boxers fight it out for the undisputed super lightweight title, making it the most-watched women’s combat sporting event ever. An average minute audience of 47 million viewers tuned in to watch the fight in the US alone.

However, the former three-division champion and self-proclaimed ‘GWOAT’ Claressa Shields thinks otherwise. In an interview with FightHubTV, Shields stated that even though Serrano and Taylor are top athletes, the event garnered such views because of the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson main event. This comment did not sit right with the MVP CEO Nakisa Bidarian as he called out Shields while giving an update on the trilogy match between these two.

On Sunday, Bidarian appeared in an interview with talkSPORT Boxing. During the interview, journalist Gareth A. Davies asked whether the MVP is looking to “get a trilogy fight between them on the undercard of Jake’s next fight.” Before giving an answer to the possible third match, Bidarian corrected Davies and stated that the Amanda Serrano-Katie Taylor fight was not on the undercard, rather it was the co-main event.

Bidarian stated, “Every time Amanda Serrano has fought on an MVP card with Jake Paul, she’s been the co-main event.” Bidarian then called out Shields and accused her of trying to dismiss the historical significance of the match by changing the “narrative.” He stated, “It’s amazing to see how the narrative changes. I’ve seen Clarissa Shields now say, ‘You guys didn’t have the biggest women’s event because people weren’t watching for you, they were watching for Paul-Tyson’.”

Bidarian then highlighted the contradiction in Shields’ earlier statement where she had said, “You’re underneath Paul-Tyson you should be after them. You guys are the real boxers.” Bidarian, while defending the Taylor-Serrano match, explained, “The entire strategy of what we did was to give women’s boxing the biggest platform it’s ever had. We knew that Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano were unbelievable athletes that were going to put on the show of a lifetime.”

Undoubtedly, MVP promoted this rematch as much as they could and the stage could not have been bigger. According to reports, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano became the highest-paid boxers in female boxing history, breaking the previous record held by Claressa Shields herself.

According to MVP CEO, he was happy with the attraction that the fight got. “We love the result of what the event did. We don’t like the result of the decision,” stated Bidarian as his fighter lost via a unanimous decision, once again.

Bidarian then opened up about the possible third match between ‘The Real Deal’ and the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion, and fans would be joyous by the answer.

Amanda Serrano-Katie Taylor: History in the Making

The English reporter asked Bidarian about the possibility of a third match and the hesitation he heard from Taylor’s camp regarding it, something he mentioned during his interview with Alycia Baumgardner as well.

However, the promoter put any kind of doubt out of the picture and stated, “We had a trilogy pre-agreed had Amanda won or if it was a draw,” so no one can back out now. He further added, “We’ll look to do a trilogy if that’s what Amanda and Katie want to do.”

Coincidentally, Serrano already had a verbal agreement and a handshake for a third match with The Bray Bomber. The duo came together ahead of their rematch for a face-to-face interview and agreed to the third match, regardless of the outcome.

However, there was a specific condition as both of them wanted their third and final match against each other to be 12 rounds of 3 minutes each. Serrano had already fought in a 12-3 minute match last year against Danila Ramos. However, despite not having any experience with a 12-round match, Katie Taylor immediately agreed, stating that the longer format would suit her gameplay better.

Considering how both of their earlier fights delivered, there is no doubt about the quality of these two. So, they won’t be against seeing them having a 12-round match.
