“It’s Canelo,” YouTube star Jake Paul declared calling out Canelo Alvarez during the TimboSugarShow podcast with MMA stars Sean O’Malley and Tim Welch before entering the ring with Mike Tyson on Friday night. In fact, ‘The Problem Child’ has been angling for a fight against the Mexican superstar for a while. Regardless, in the meantime, women’s heavyweight champion Claressa Shields seems to have joined this conversation.
“This moment will prove I’m the face of boxing, the largest attraction,” Paul continued about his fight against ‘Iron’ Mike. “Me vs. Canelo at 200 pounds for the cruiserweight championship of the world is the biggest fight, arguably even bigger than me vs. Tyson, and it makes so much sense.” Paul, of course, went on to defeat the former heavyweight champion at Jerry World via unanimous decision.
Although the fight itself lacked excitement, the victory nonetheless advanced Paul’s quest to secure a potential showdown with Canelo Alvarez. Paul has even solidified his stance on wanting a fight against Canelo while appearing in the recent episode of his podcast BS w/ Jake Paul, stating, “Genuinely, everyone’s biggest critique is ‘Fight a pro! Fight someone your age!’”

“So when I said Canelo is the person, then everyone hates on that…wouldn’t the best opportunity to see me lose be going up against Canelo?” He then added, “People won’t be satisfied with my career until I get f***ing flatlined…one of the best to ever do it, a legend, pound-for-pound great… yeah, it’s gonna be an insane fight.”
While Canelo Alvarez hasn’t responded to the fight callout from Jake Paul, undisputed middleweight champion Claressa Shields tried to nudge Canelo toward the fight with her latest message on social media. “Canelo, if Jake Paul is calling you out about how he can beat you in a fight, why won’t you just whoop his a**,” she said in a video on Instagram.

“Shut him up… Now this is what I want to say about the men in boxing. Why the hell y’all won’t get in the ring and fight them and beat them,” Shields added. It’s unclear whether Shields’ fiery message can convince Canelo to fight Paul, but in the past, he has already shared his thoughts on a potential fight against Paul.

The thing is, this isn’t the first time Jake Paul has called out the former undisputed super middleweight champion. For instance, after defeating former UFC champion Anderson Silva in 2022, Paul called out Canelo, wanting a piece of that boxing action. Even in March earlier this year, Paul was looking past Tyson to a Canelo fight.

However, while appearing in an interview with TMZ Sports back in March, Canelo Alvarez had already made his stance clear on whether the fight will ever materialize. “Not at all, not at all. No, nothing,” Canelo said when asked whether he was interested. “I think Netflix being involved, yes it’s good, but not in that kind of fight. I think it’s more [of a] show than a fight. That’s what I think.”
That being said, it’s quite clear how Canelo Alvarez feels about a fight against Jake Paul. Even with Claressa Shields pushing Paul’s agenda, it would be a big shock if Canelo ends up accepting the challenge. Meanwhile, Paul has also called out the likes of Gervonta Davis and Conor McGregor—only time will tell what’s next for them. Do you think Canelo should fight him?
